We see and hear stories of people scavenging around for scrap metal in order to make some money on the TV etc. Well it seems that a seventy five year old Georgian woman could not believe her luck when she thought she had found a nice stash of copper cable buried just below ground level.
It turns out that it was not copper after all, it was fibre optic and it carried the main broadband service from Georgia to neighbouring Armenia. The cable was cut by a spade and in turn cut 3.2 million Armenians off the net! Engineers from ArmenTel, FiberNet Communication and GNC-Alfa finally restored broadband after realising what had happened.
According to a spokesman for Georgia’s interior ministry, “It was a 75-year-old woman who was digging for copper in the ground so that she could sell it for scrap,”
This may seem to be an amusing story, but there is a serious side to it, the un-named woman is actually facing three years in jail!
