Portable electronics cause interference on flights

In a new study by the ABC news network, it seems that mobile phones and other electrical do actually interfere with the electrics on aircraft after all! Currently most airlines insist that all electrical devices are switch off during the flight.

In the report, it is noticed that over a six year period ending in 2009 there were seventy five incidents, where flight controls were compromised by interference from personal electrical devices.

According to research by the US news, channel ABC;

Twenty-six of the incidents in the report affected the flight controls, including the autopilot, auto thrust and landing gear. Seventeen affected navigation systems, while 15 affected communication systems. Thirteen of the incidents produced electronic warnings, including “engine indications.” The type of personal device most often suspected in the incidents were cell phones, linked to four out of ten.

This is really worrying, because it seems that although the use of electrical items during flights are banned, some passengers are disregarding these rules and putting the whole flight in danger. Although it has to be said that aviation experts believe that aircraft could easily be protected from interference with proper insulation that stops interference from occurring in the first place.
