CIA website brought down by DDoS

It looks as if the hacker group LulzSec are taking responsibility for the recent down time experienced by the website run by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

The website fell victim of a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack where the hacker organisation LulzSec used its network of zombie computers to visit the site, making so many demands at one time soon becomes too much for the servers, they simply begin to overload and then shut down.

At this point, the job has been done and although the CIA’s web service was down for several hours, it returned with harm done, apart from a few red faces here and there.

The LulzSec group run line between doing this sort of thing for fun and being a hackivist organisation, to the victims of a DDoS attack there is little distinction between the two!
