NASA successfully tests robotic lander

As NASA prepares to say goodbye to the last Space Shuttle, Atlantis a new era of space exploration is being tested. These are small robotic craft that are able to land on the surface of the Moon or maybe even Mars without the need for any human interference.

This is an important step forward, because in the past these landers have been totally reliant on parachutes or massive airbags, which if they fail means the end of the mission before it has even started.

The video shows the craft in a test hanger, where it was able to make a soft landing from a height over seven feet. NASA engineers went through the process once with the craft and then it was able to make the landing with no assistance.
