NASA’s Dawn spacecraft orbits Vesta

Over the weekend the NASA spacecraft Dawn reached the 330 mile wide asteroid Vesta to become the first spacecraft ever to orbit such a large body in space, which is also known as a Protoplanet. Dawn will spend a year studying the asteroid and gathering essential information about its origins.

According to the NASA chief Charles Bolden he said in a statement;

“Dawn’s study of the asteroid Vesta marks a major scientific accomplishment and also points the way to the future destinations where people will travel in the coming years. President Obama has directed NASA to send astronauts to an asteroid by 2025, and Dawn is gathering crucial data that will inform that mission.”
