A Million Sign Up For Star Wars: The Old Republic

The massively multiplayer online game, also known as MMO or MMOG has seen a up and down effect over the years, you only have to check out those online games that have switched from being subscription based to free to use, Lord of the Rings and Warhammer Online are a good example here. So when BioWare, EA and LucasArts prepared to launch the subscription based game Star Wars: The Old Republic all eyes would have been on its performance.

However, this is Star Wars and has a ready made audience that spans from the 1970’s to the present day! So it seems fair to assume that there will be some early sign ups for this game, in fact in less than a couple of weeks over million gamers have paid for the game and are playing online! A million that a fair amount cash by anyone’s standards.

According to the BioWare and LucasArts press release for the games launch;

Star Wars: The Old Republic is set thousands of years before the classic Star Wars movies, with the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire locked in the middle of an epic, galactic war. Players choose one of eight iconic Star Wars characters, including the Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler, Trooper, Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor, Bounty Hunter and Imperial Agent, becoming the hero or villain of their own personal Star Wars saga. Players will team up with friends online, fighting in heroic battles reminiscent of the films, immersing themselves in a galaxy full of vibrant characters and planets, while experiencing visceral Star Wars combat.

Prices start from £45 in the UK and $60 in the US for the game, followed by a subscription of £10 or $15 per month.
