Asteroid Will Pass Under Some Satellites

We will need to keep a keen eye on the skies next year for an asteroid named DA13 will pass the earth so close that it will actually come in under some of the satellites orbiting the planet. NASA claim that asteroid measures around 200 feet and was only spotted a couple of weeks ago.

The asteroid will be at its closest on the 15th February 2013, with a distance of 16,700 miles, to put that into context the International Space Station (ISS) maintains an orbit of around 250 miles.

According to the NASA expert David Dunham, he said at Moscow’s University of Electronics and Mathematics;

“The Earth’s gravitational field will alter the asteroid’s path significantly. Further scrupulous calculation is required to estimate the threat of collision,”

He added;

“The asteroid may break into dozens of small pieces, or several large lumps may split from it and burn up in the atmosphere.”
