New government plans to force drivers to insure and tax their vehicles are being proposed and these plans are quite controversial. Currently many petrol stations use some sort on CCTV to catch those who drive off without paying. However, a new system using Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and connected to the DVLA database could stop the driver from filling up at the pump.
According to Brian Madderson, who is the chairman of the organisation that represents petrol retailers, RMI Petrol, said;
“Staff are already getting stick from motorists for high fuel prices. This proposal will increase the potential for conflict. Our cashiers are not law enforcers.”
