As the next generation of mobile services prepares to launch this summer, it seems that a fast mobile internet connection will come at a price for around two million households who will find that as the 4G service is switched on, their digital TV service will be switched off! This will not affect everyone, just those who get their digital television through a signal amplifier or communal aerial.
According to the consumer group, Voice of the Listener and Viewer (VLV), they have said that this is;
A major threat to the principle of universal provision in public service broadcasting.
The Government is proposing various forms of assistance for homes but this will only be for a limited period of time.
Householders may find – too late – that they are no longer able to switch from subscription to free-to-air television.
