Human Powered Helicopter Takes To The Air

The idea of a human powered helicopter is no longer the domain of the movies or comic books! For this is the Gamera II it’s the second pedal powered helicopter from a team of students at the University of Maryland. The first Gamera hovered for just eleven seconds, but after improvements this is Gamera II and as you will see from the video, it stays hovering for fifty seconds, but if they are to claim the $250,000 (£160,000) AHS Sikorsky Prize the human powered helicopter must remain in the air for one minute!

These are the details for the Gamera II HPH 50 second flight!

Turns out this video is “only” a 45ish second flight, click the link above for the real 50 second record flight! Gamera II is the second human powered helicopter from the University of Maryland’s Alfred Gessow Rotorcraft Center. This flight was piloted by Kyle Gluesenkamp.
