Apps come and go, however there are some which just NEED to be downloaded straight to your new phone as soon as you get it. Here are the 10 must-have downloads as soon as you unpack your new iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C.
Facebook – download (FREE!)
A recent survey by Experian found that social networking sites account for more of the typical person’s online activity than anything else, so it’s no surprise that the Facebook app is hugely popular. This app has also just been updated for iOS7 so it looks lovely and fresh.
Numerous polls have listed Facebook as the most downloaded app of all time and it looks and works more or less the same way as the website, which could be why it’s so well liked.
Twitter – download (FREE!)
The Twitter app is a common sight on smartphones across the world. With its simple interface and 140-character limit, it is perfectly suited to mobile devices.
It provides a quick and easy way to keep up to date with what’s going on in the world and is being embraced by all levels of society from footballers, to the government and the Pope.
Instagram – download (FREE!)
If you use sites like Facebook and Twitter, you’re probably familiar with Instagram. This photo-sharing app allows people to quickly take a photo, edit it and then share with their friends and family.
It was named Apple’s App of the Year in 2011 and is currently only available on the iPhone and Android.
Google Maps – download (FREE!)
Thanks to the Google Maps app, the days of people getting lost could soon be long gone. This incredibly handy program essentially allows your phone to operate as a sat nav that can pinpoint your location and show you how to get to where you need to be.
Last year, Apple released its own maps application, but it wasn’t well received and Google is still very much the leader in this field.
Angry Birds – download (£0.69p)
If you had to choose one program that symbolizes the massive popularity of apps, Angry Birds is probably a good choice. This game where you fire cartoon birds from a slingshot has millions of players and is praised for its low price, simplicity and is incredibly well known throughout the world.
A special Star Wars spin-off version of the game has recently been released and its progress shows no sign of slowing.
Groupon – download (FREE!)
Everybody loves a good bargain and the Groupon app helps people to find deals and discounts in their location. Whether it’s cheap tickets for the cinema or a discount at a spa, this app helps you get the most out of your local area.
Candy Crush Saga – download (FREE!)
Another game that has become very popular is Candy Crush. This app challenges users to create their own special sweets by stacking levels of candy.
It is developed by the online gaming company King, which was recently identified as one of the top-hiring start-up firms for IT jobs in a report by jobs fair Silicon Milkroundabout and search engine Adzuna.
Fruit Ninja – download (FREE!)
If you like slicing fruit, you’ll love Fruit Ninja. This popular app has received rave reviews and is seen as one of the best mobile games on the market. The concept is simple, you slice as much fruit as possible using your fingers on a touch screen. However, the game is challenging as well – as this becomes increasingly difficult as you progress through the various stages.
Youtube – download (FREE!)
Another web heavyweight that has been successful in the app market is Youtube. The video-sharing site has adapted well to the smartphone interface and remains the most popular way to watch and share clips on the move.
Snapchat – download (FREE!)
This app provides a photo messaging service and is roughly similar to Instagram. It allows users to quickly take a picture, attach a caption and send it off to a friend and is all about ‘sharing moments’ with one another.
However, the images are only temporary and people can set a time limit of up to ten seconds for how long a recipient can view the picture.
Perhaps the best thing about apps is the fact that almost anyone can create one. The most successful apps tend to be small and often quite simple programs that can easily be developed by an enthusiast in their bedroom, as well as by established IT companies. Interested in building your own apps? There are a whole host of options out there. Try something like a Computeach programming course to learn how to build your own app. Thanks to the social power of the internet they can become an overnight hit without major financial investment.
