There was a time when there was nothing simple about taking a photograph, even photos taken with instant cameras were costly to develop. Then came digital photography, this is the defining point where photography became affordable to all.
But it was the inclusion of powerful cameras into smartphones that really rekindled the interest in photography for many people and now this interest means that digital cameras are becoming more popular.
One of the market leaders is Sony and the recent World Photography Awards (SWPA 2014) hosted by Sony has proven that digital cameras are not only popular with consumers, but offer some really cool features such as; An Exmor CMOS sensor, the popular ZEISS or Sony optical zoom lens, SteadyShot image stabilisation, built in Wi-Fi and NFC. The range is staggering too, with a cyber shot compact camera being available to suit all budgets and skill levels. These cameras are now being used to produce some wonderful images that capture a moment in time that can be treasured forever.
The SWPA competition was a so popular that around 140,000 entries from 166 countries were received and after being shortlisted, twenty five were chosen over four the categories; open, professional, student focus and youth.
We have chosen our favourites from the top twenty five, as these images demonstrate to us the diversity of subjects and just how advanced the technology found in digital cameras has changed the way in which photographs are taken and how an image can capture something fantastic.
A competition is a great way to challenge creativity and technology, it will push the boundaries of the photographer to limits unthought of a decade ago and that makes us wonder what the future has in store for this interesting sector that keeps on surprising us.
It makes no difference what level a photographer is at, there will be a digital camera that meets both their skill and budget levels, this is the great thing about camera design today, producing a great image in longer in the hands of the pros, the entries to the SWAP 2014 prove that!
