Imagine this; you switch on your iPhone in the morning only to find that it has been locked and to make it even more creepy scary, there is a pop up on the screen demanding cash in order for you to gain access it! This is what some iPhone and iPad owners in Australia are reporting. According to one iPhone owner, going by the online name of “veritylikestea” this is what they wrote;
“I went to check my phone and there was a message on the screen … saying that my device(s) had been hacked by ‘Oleg Pliss’ and he/she/they demanded $100 USD/EUR (sent by Paypal to firstname.lastname@example.org) to return them to me. I have no idea how this has happened.”
But, here is a kicker! Paypal, say that there is no linked account with that name. Vodafone, say that the iPhone cannot be hacked. Other carriers say it is an Apple issue. This appears to be the result of compromised data that has been used to access accounts and lock the user out!
It seems that those who have been affected did not have a passcode activated on the device, as there are reports that those who activated a passcode can still access the device as normal. For further advice on how to access a blocked phone Apple have a password reset page or it can be changed on iTunes.
