You have to go back to the eighties to remember when the movie They Live was released, it starred the Canadian professional wrestler “Rowdy” Roddy Piper who discovers that aliens are living among us, but humans cannot see them or their hidden messages. It is only when he is given a special pair of sunglasses that the horrifying truth can be seen and then the battle to expose the truth to the rest of the world begins. Its a great science fiction movie and the thing is it could be happening right now, right here and we would be none the wiser about the alien invasion.
Local artists Stephen Zeigler and Calder Greenwood have created these scenes, which are just like the movie expect this time it is taking place in modern day Los Angeles! Yet, it seems that the locals are just as oblivious to the alien who is walking amongst them, only on this occasion, the aliens are not using any mind bending technology to hide their existence or the messages. The guy looks just like the aliens from the movie and back then of course, it was scary. Today it looks like people expect to see weird and wonderful things on the streets of our cities, lets just hope that the aliens do not know that or maybe they already do!
This is a great example of live art taking place in a busy city location, with plenty of people around going about their daily business and who are almost unaware that there is strange looking guy standing right them. The same can be said for the subliminal messages that have been placed around the location! Just like in the movie, it seems that we humans are driven by work and consumerism, while not taking in what is going on all around us most of the time.
