A while ago there was a video of road crossing in Germany that had been converted to reproduce the game of pong on the post where you press the cross button. It was only an exhibition piece then, yet the video went viral and so it must have seemed that it would be a great idea to actually bring the idea to life for real. So the city of Hildesheim is officially the place to visit should you want to play a mini game of pong while waiting the crossing to stop the traffic and allow you to cross. Something tells us, that drivers in the city will be avoiding that street like the plague, as the queues of people waiting to play pong will mean a traffic jams and frustration.
The idea is based on the work of a couple of students from the Faculty of Design at the HAWK University, they worked on the original idea that was a sort of simulation and now this has become a reality with the game being built into the panel where the press to cross button is placed. So now instead of waiting around, the pedestrian can pass the time by playing pong for while before the lights change to stop the traffic.
The idea for the project was first visualized in 2012 in a short video clip, in which the situation was simulated to look very life-like. In actual fact, the video presentation was a perfectly crafted synthesis of animation and real images. The simulation was developed on the computer and projected onto the traffic-signal buttons filmed with a green screen.
The cost of such an installation is not known, however due to the complex nature of the StreetPong crossing it is surely not going to be cheap and therefore is not likely to be appearing at a crossing near you anytime soon. Of course, there are the possibilities that people will be turning up at crossings just to play the game and gather a couple of cool selfies in the process.
