It is a funny thing, but as massive user of wireless networks I have never considered the amount of wireless signals surrounding me. However, there is now an app for that and its called the Architecture of Radio! Once downloaded the app will show you all of the different kinds of wireless signal at your locations. Obviously, it stands to reasons that built up areas will have lots of signals, but even in rural areas there lots of signals beaming around as there is nothing to stop them. It does beg the question though if this app is able to see the signals, then a hacker can and intercepting data in mid air has to be easier than at the source, doesn’t it?
The Architecture of Radio is a data visualization, based on global open datasets of cell tower, Wi-Fi and satellite locations. Based on your GPS location the app shows a 360 degree visualization of signals around you. The dataset includes almost 7 million cell towers, 19 million Wi-Fi routers and hundreds of satellites.
The Architecture of Radio smartphone app is available now for the owners of iOS powered devices at a price of $2.99 from iTunes. For more details on this interesting app and what it can do, go to the Architecture of Radio website.
