DARPA’s 20 metre per second autonomous drone!

We already know about the work of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the robots that they have been working on and so it should come as no surprise to hear that they have been working an autonomous drone! However, being DARPA this is no ordinary drone this is a fully loaded and fully autonomous drone that is capable of travelling at 20 metres per second using the Fast Lightweight Autonomy (FLA) program.

If successful, FLA would reduce operator workload and stress and allow humans to focus on higher-level supervision of multiple formations of manned and unmanned platforms as part of a single system. Through this exploration, the program aims to develop and demonstrate the capability for small (i.e., able to fit through windows) autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles to fly at speeds up to 20 m/s with no communication to the operator and without GPS.
