There is a worry that the work of Google owned Boston Dynamics could be the beginning of the real Skynet, but if this video of the robot known as Atlas is anything to go on we are safe for now. The video shows the next generation of robot going about its business picking up boxes and carrying them around from place to place. Nothing brilliant about that, but when a human armed with a hockey stick and a length of tubing decides to bully the robot, you kind of feel sorry for the robot. The fact is nobody likes a bully no matter what the circumstances are and of course, with time Atlas will become more intelligent, stronger and then maybe the tables will be turned, which is the point when you should all begin to worry.
A new version of Atlas, designed to operate outdoors and inside buildings. It is specialized for mobile manipulation. It is electrically powered and hydraulically actuated. It uses sensors in its body and legs to balance and LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles, assess the terrain, help with navigation and manipulate objects. This version of Atlas is about 5′ 9″ tall (about a head shorter than the DRC Atlas) and weighs 180 lbs.
