When it comes to Louis Theroux there is no mistake that his work is humorous, scary and it has to be said makes you think about life. So for his first movie length feature what could possibly the subject matter, business, the one per cent, politicians or the Church of Scientology, of course, its the later as it is already in the title of the post. So there have been films on the subject before and we already know of the famous members too, so what is new here? Well in true Louis Theroux style we get to see the church and its members from a different angle, this is the appeal of My Scientology Movie.
With a lifetime of experience dealing with eccentric, unpalatable and unexpected human behaviour, the unassuming Theroux won’t take no for an answer when his request to enter the Church of Scientology headquarters is turned down. Inspired by the Church’s alleged techniques, and aided by former Scientology members-turned-whistleblowers, Theroux uses actors to recreate incidents people claim to have experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates.
My Scientology Movie digs deep into a world that for most of us is closed, sure some of the scenes may be staged and for good reason, some actors have been used too, again for good reason. The fact is that for some people they fear organisations like this and this could be a chance for the Church of Scientology to open its doors and welcome us in with open arms. You can make up your mind when Louis Theroux’s My Scientology Movie is released on the 7th October.
