    Serious Sam: Shatterverse — Multiversal Mayhem Meets 5-Player Co-op

    Serious Sam is turning 25 this year, and instead of just blowing out some candles, Devolver Digital is blowing up the multiverse. Announced during the latest Xbox Partner Preview, Serious Sam: Shatterverse is a bold new direction for the legendary “boomer shooter” franchise.

    In a surprising twist, the game isn’t being helmed by series creators Croteam. Instead, development duties have been handed to Behaviour Interactive, the powerhouse studio behind the asymmetric horror hit Dead by Daylight.

    A Sam for Every Timeline

    The premise is pure, unadulterated Serious Sam ridiculousness. The series’ perennial big-bad, Mental, has used “dimensional machinations” to fracture the walls of reality. This has created the Shatterverse, a collapsed world where various versions of Sam Stone from across infinite dimensions have been pulled together.

    For the first time in the series, up to five players can team up in co-operative play. You won’t just be playing as generic soldiers; you’ll be stepping into the boots of different Sams from across the multiverse to hunt down Mental’s five nefarious lieutenants and repair reality.

    Roguelite Meets Run-and-Gun

    While the core DNA remains high-adrenaline, arena-based chaos, Shatterverse introduces a modern roguelite structure. Here is what players can expect from the gameplay loop:

    Shifting Universes: Procedurally shifted runs across hand-crafted arenas mean no two attempts to save the multiverse will feel the same.

    The Serious Arsenal: Expect a “frankly irresponsible” amount of firepower. The game mixes classic staples like the Double Shotgun and XL2 Laser with experimental “Shatter-tech” weaponry.

    Boons and Modifiers: Players can stack wild buffs and run modifiers to bend the rules of combat, creating high-risk, high-reward opportunities that can supercharge a run—or end it instantly.

    Permanent Progression: In true roguelite fashion, death isn’t the end. You’ll unlock upgrades that permanently expand your strategic possibilities for future runs.

    A “Serious” Stamp of Approval

    Despite the change in developer, fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Croteam has given the project its full blessing. Davor Hunski, co-creator of Serious Sam, expressed his excitement:

    “It’s very exciting to see another talented team step in and create something bold, fresh and different within the universe we cherished for so long. I can’t wait for both the old and new fans to experience this new interpretation of the series!”

    Behaviour Interactive’s Nic Duchesne echoed this sentiment, stating the goal was to “respect Serious Sam’s rich legacy while presenting it in a fresh, contemporary way.”

    Serious Sam: Shatterverse is slated for release in 2026 (targeting the 25th-anniversary window of The First Encounter). It will be available on:

    The Killer: The Krasue – A Duality of Horror

    The star of this show is undoubtedly The Krasue, a Killer unlike any we’ve seen before. Her lore is a haunting tale of a talented opera singer, Burong Sukapat, who makes a dark pact for fame, only to find herself cursed. By day, she’s a beautiful performer. By night, she’s transformed into a horrific creature from Thai folklore: a disembodied head with her entrails trailing behind, floating through the air with an insatiable hunger.

    This duality is at the heart of her gameplay. The Krasue can switch between two forms:

    • Body Form: This is her “human” state, where she moves on foot and can fire a projectile that infects Survivors with a “Leeching Gland.” This projectile curses them, making them vulnerable to her other form.
    • Floating Head Form: This is where the true terror begins. The Krasue tears free from her body, becoming a high-speed, mobile head with a long, bloody Intestinal Whip. This form allows her to traverse the map and strike at infected Survivors, making them easy prey.

    The unique mechanic of infecting Survivors and then switching forms to pursue them adds an exciting layer of strategy for Killer mains. The Krasue’s perks also lean into her themes, with abilities that deceive Survivors and reveal their locations, creating a truly unsettling experience.

    The Survivor: Vee Boonyasak – A Punk Rock Counterpoint

    Balancing out the opera-fueled horror is Vee Boonyasak, a charismatic and energetic punk drummer from the band Axekick. Vee’s backstory connects her to Burong in a spooky way, as her band once performed to the eerie echoes of the opera singer’s recordings.

    Vee’s perks reflect her punk rock attitude and road-life experience. They are focused on speed and teamwork:

    • Ghost Notes: Helps her recover from Exhaustion faster and makes her Scratch Marks disappear quicker.
    • One-Two-Three-Four!: A team-oriented perk that invigorates her teammates with a slew of Skill Checks, empowering their own abilities.
    • Road Life: Rewards her for landing Great Skill Checks while injured, allowing her to heal a Health State.

    Vee is the perfect counterpoint to the slow, methodical terror of The Krasue, bringing a fast-paced, kinetic energy to the trials.

    Beyond the New Characters: Patch 9.2.0

    “Sinister Grace” isn’t just about the new characters. The accompanying 9.2.0 update brings a massive wave of changes and quality-of-life improvements to the game, including:

    • A major overhaul of The Shape (Michael Myers), with redesigned modes and a new special attack.
    • Significant balance changes to numerous Killers and Survivor perks, shaking up the meta.
    • Quality-of-life updates like automatic recovery in the dying state and improved match details.
    • Pallet density updates to reduce “dead zones” in several maps.
