Get Wired: Slug Disco Unveils ‘Retroneer’ – The Circuit-Building Roguelike You Didn’t Know You Needed

If you’ve ever looked at the back of a motherboard and thought, “I wish I could turn this into a high-stakes tactical adventure,” then your very specific wish has just been granted. Slug Disco—the publishing powerhouse behind Empires of the Undergrowth—has officially announced its partnership with indie developer enoom to bring us Retroneer.

Described as a “puzzling circuit-building roguelike,” Retroneer is trading in traditional swords and spells for soldering irons and silicon. It’s a game about tinkering, optimisation, and the pure, “thocky” satisfaction of a well-placed component.

The Core Loop: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

In Retroneer, you aren’t just playing a character; you’re managing a workbench. The gameplay revolves around RIFFs (Runner Integration Functional Frames)—modular electrical circuits that serve as your “game boards.”

Your mission? Meet the increasingly demanding energy requests of your customers by assembling complex systems on the fly. You’ll be utilising a deep toolkit of components:

    • Modules & Trinkets: The bread and butter of your build.
    • Runners: The flow-guiding logic of your board.
    • Scrap & Frames: The raw materials for your next big breakthrough.

    Deep Synergies and “Thocky” Feedback

What sets Retroneer apart from your average puzzle game is its roguelike heart. Every run offers a new opportunity to discover game-breaking synergies. The developers are leaning heavily into the sensory experience of engineering; expect a symphony of satisfying clicks, whirs, and “thocks” as you snap components into place.

But don’t let the minimalist aesthetic fool you. While it’s designed to be approachable enough to pick up in minutes, the ceiling for optimisation is massive. As you uncover the secrets of “Amplitude” technology, you’ll realise there’s a much darker story lurking beneath the copper wiring.

    When Can We Play?

Retroneer is currently slated for a 2027 release on Steam, but you won’t have to wait that long to get your hands on it. Playtest sign-ups are officially open now via the Steam page, and Slug Disco plans to run various testing phases throughout the remainder of 2026.

TechMash Take: Slug Disco has a knack for picking up titles with unique, granular hooks. Retroneer looks like it’ll hit that same “just one more turn” sweet spot that made Opus Magnum a cult classic, but with the added unpredictability of a roguelike.

Wishlist it now on Steam and get ready to short-circuit the competition!
