Retro Roots and Towering Robots: PD_CGT Announces LURRUNA

Indie developer PD_CGT has officially pulled back the curtain on their latest project: LURRUNA – The Island of Towering Automatons. If you’ve been craving a return to the “tough-as-nails” era of 8-bit platforming, this might just be the summer highlight you’ve been waiting for.

Described as a love letter to the “Classicvania” formula, LURRUNA takes players on a perilous journey across a mysterious island teeming with mechanical monstrosities and environmental hazards.

    The “Gravity-Bound Bomber”

You play as Dafne, a pilot who has crash-landed on the titular island. Dafne isn’t your typical sword-wielding hero; her primary tool of survival is a specialised arcing bomb.

    • Chargeable Combat: Bombs can be charged up to three times, changing their potency and allowing for tactical approaches to different enemy types.
    • The “Fixed-Jump” System: In a bold move that pays tribute to 80s classics like Castlevania and Ghosts ‘n Goblins, jumping in LURRUNA has no mid-air control. Once you’re committed to a leap, your momentum is set until you hit the ground.

Developer David Peters (PD_CGT) notes that this “fixed-jump” mechanic is a deliberate design choice:

“It encourages players to fight more methodically and changes how they perceive the gravity of the world.”

    Key Features at a Glance

PD_CGT is known for releasing focused, arcade-inspired titles (like Cycle Chaser H-5 and SomnaBuster), and LURRUNA looks to continue that streak of high-quality retro action.

    Why You Should Care

In an age of floaty physics and “save-anywhere” mechanics, LURRUNA is leaning into the rigour and precision of the NES era. It’s not just about nostalgia; it’s about that specific brand of satisfaction that comes from mastering a rigid movement system and overcoming a screen-filling boss through pure pattern recognition.

For those eager to get their hands on it early, a demo is expected to surface during Steam Next Fest this June.

LURRUNA – The Island of Towering Automatons is currently slated for a Q3 2026 release. You can wishlist the game now on Steam to keep track of Dafne’s explosive adventure.
