Deep Space, No Rescue: Directive 8020 Touches Down May 12th

The wait is almost over. Supermassive Games has officially confirmed that Directive 8020, the next evolution of The Dark Pictures Anthology, will launch on May 12, 2026.

After a brief delay from its original 2025 window, the studio behind Until Dawn and The Quarry is finally ready to take us 12 light-years away to the surface of Tau Ceti f. Whether you’re on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC, the cosmic horror starts this spring.

The Story: Trust No One, Not Even Yourself

Set aboard the colony ship Cassiopeia, the game stars Lashana Lynch as pilot Brianna Young. After a catastrophic crash landing, the crew discovers they aren’t alone on this alien world. They are being hunted by a shapeshifting threat that can perfectly mimic its prey.

In a classic “The Thing” scenario, the tension doesn’t just come from the shadows—it comes from the person standing next to you.

New Features: A Leap for the Franchise

This isn’t just “The Dark Pictures in space.” Supermassive is introducing significant gameplay overhauls to keep the formula fresh:

    • Turning Points: A brand-new mechanic for completionists. This feature allows you to rewind and revisit pivotal decisions, making it easier to see alternative endings or save a favourite character from a gruesome fate without restarting the entire game.
    • Planetary Exploration: Moving away from tight corridors, players will now traverse the harsh, open landscape of Tau Ceti f.
    • Enhanced Stealth and Action: Expect more real-time gameplay, including stealth sequences and direct combat against the mimic threat.
    • Survivor Mode: For the purists, this mode disables the Turning Points feature, ensuring every death is permanent, and every choice is final.

    Pre-Order Bonuses & Editions

Digital and physical pre-orders are live now for consoles (Steam coming soon). If you secure your copy early, you’ll receive a free upgrade to the Deluxe Edition, which includes:

    Bonus ContentDescription

Cinematic Filters60s (Black & White), 70s (Gritty Film), and 80s (VHS) filters.
Bonus Mission“Heirlooms Retrieval”—hunt for relics from the first four games.

    Multiplayer: Couch Co-op and Beyond

At launch, Directive 8020 will support 5-player couch co-op, perfect for the “pass-the-controller” horror nights the studio is famous for. While online multiplayer won’t be available on day one, Supermassive has confirmed it will arrive as a free post-launch update shortly after release.

Are you ready to decide who lives and who becomes alien biomass? Mark your calendars for May 12th.
