Pop-Punk, Hand-Drawn & Unmistakable — Kobayashi Dives Deep Into Stupid Never Dies’ Iconic Look

With exactly one week to go until launch, GPTRACK50 and publisher Aniplex have pulled back the curtain on the bold, eye-popping visual identity powering Stupid Never Dies. In a brand-new entry in their DEEP BITE behind-the-scenes video series, legendary producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi takes viewers through the striking art direction that sets this pop-punk action RPG apart from everything else on the horizon.

The game blazes onto PC and PlayStation 5 next Tuesday — 21 October 2026.

What Is It That You’re Seeing?

Stupid Never Dies doesn’t look like any other RPG out there — and that was exactly the point. As Kobayashi explains, the team set out to build a world that feels simultaneously hand-crafted and futuristic, gritty and neon-bright:

“We wanted visuals that feel like someone reached straight off the page and pulled them into 3D — sketchy, alive, full of personality.” — Hiroyuki Kobayashi, Producer & President GPTRACK50

The signature pillars of the style:

    ElementThe Vision
Sketch-style 3DModels retain the texture and linework of hand-drawn concept art — no sterile photorealism here
OvertechnologyClassic monsters reimagined with futuristic, cyberpunk-infused twists — vampires with glowing circuits, golems pulsing with neon energy
Era-blending environmentsReal-world urban locations collide with aesthetics from across history, creating dreamlike, surreal districts that shift as you explore
Pop-punk paletteElectric pinks, acid greens, and vivid blues crash against deep shadows — a deliberate rejection of the drab browns and greys typical of zombie and horror games
Davy’s POV UIEven the interface is framed through protagonist Davy’s eyes — camera angles, overlays, and effects all reinforce his perspective

From Dark Survival to Living Art

For Kobayashi — best known for decades of work on Resident Evil — this game represents a conscious departure from the grim, realistic horror he helped define:

“I’ve painted a lot of very realistic zombies in my time. I wanted to try something new — something that looks like art fighting.”

He cites Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Arcane as key inspirations — animation that doesn’t hide its artistic process, that lets brushstrokes and texture show through. The result is a game where every swing, bite, and transformation looks like it was ripped straight from a comic book or a hyper-stylised music video.

That music-video energy is no accident. The presentation is designed to lock into the game’s soundtrack — high-tempo, pop-punk-infused beats that sync with combat impact, camera shakes, and particle bursts. When Davy devours an enemy with his Style Eat ability, the visual payoff hits as hard as the audio.

    Why This Style Matters

It’s more than just looking cool. In Stupid Never Dies, the visual language tells the story. Davy is the ultimate underdog — small, scruffy, overlooked — and the world around him is vivid, chaotic, and larger than life. Every transformation shifts his silhouette, his colour scheme, and how he moves — so you don’t just feel the change, you see it.

From scrawny zombie to werewolf, harpy, lich, and beyond — eleven distinct forms, each with their own visual identity — the art doesn’t just decorate the game; it is the game’s soul.

“It’s an underdog story. And that deserves to look spectacular.” — Hiroyuki Kobayashi
