  • Can You Protect Democracy Without Destroying It? Paintbucket Games Reveals SOKO 1977: Anti-Terror Task Force

Can You Protect Democracy Without Destroying It? Paintbucket Games Reveals SOKO 1977: Anti-Terror Task Force

What limits should a democratic state place on itself when under threat? That is the gripping core question behind SOKO 1977: Anti-Terror Task Force, an upcoming historical-political deduction game that has just dropped its first teaser trailer.

Developed by award-winning Berlin studio Paintbucket Games (Through the Darkest of Times, The Darkest Files) in collaboration with Germany’s Federal Agency for Civic Education (bpb), SOKO 1977 places players directly into the high-stakes pressure cooker of 1970s West Germany.

Check out what to expect from this unique blending of tactical investigation, political drama, and procedural roguelike design.

A Nation in Crisis: The 1970s Setting

Set during one of the most volatile eras in modern European history—the height of political upheaval and domestic terrorism during the 1970s (evoking the tense atmosphere of the German Autumn)—SOKO 1977 puts you in command of a special police task force (Sonderkommission or SOKO) based in Cologne.

Rather than retelling a literal historical document, the game crafts fictionalised, historically plausible scenarios informed by extensive research and consultations with contemporary historians. Your objective? Uncover radical underground cells, identify suspects, and intercept attacks before time runs out.

    Strategic Deduction Meets Roguelike Mechanics

At its core, SOKO 1977 combines deep investigative deduction with procedural replayability:

    • Procedural Investigations: No two playthroughs are identical. Every run features procedurally generated cases, network nodes, suspects, and tactical challenges under intense time pressure.
    • Evidence & Profiling: Analyse clues, build detailed suspect profiles, coordinate surveillance, and plan targeted operations against covert networks using incomplete or conflicting intelligence.
    • Interpersonal & Team Dynamics: Manage your unit, navigate internal squad debates, and decide how to conduct high-pressure interrogations.
    • Media & Public Trust: Operational tactical decisions don’t happen in a vacuum. Players must field tough questions from journalists and manage press conferences. How you interact with the media directly affects public trust and political backing.

    Tough Decisions and Moral Dilemmas

Paintbucket Games has built a reputation for tackling difficult historical moments with nuance, and SOKO 1977 continues that legacy. As political pressure mounts from government authorities and the public, you’ll face severe ethical questions:

    • How far can police surveillance and state authority go to ensure security?
    • Where do legitimate law enforcement measures end and overreach begin?
    • Can a free society defend itself without sacrificing the very rights and democratic values it aims to protect?

Every operational choice carries heavy consequences, branching your investigative narrative into different paths and outcomes depending on where you draw the line.

    Release Window & Platforms

SOKO 1977: Anti-Terror Task Force is scheduled to launch in early 2027 on PC and macOS via Steam. With more details set to emerge later this year, it’s already shaping up to be one of the most intellectually compelling strategy-deduction games on the indie horizon.

  • Deep Dive: How Campfire Cabal Revives History in Expeditions: Samurai

Deep Dive: How Campfire Cabal Revives History in Expeditions: Samurai

When it comes to historical roleplaying games, balancing precise factual details with player freedom is no easy task. Developer Campfire Cabal is peeling back the curtain on how they bring the upcoming Expeditions: Samurai to life, offering fresh insights into their meticulous approach to world-building and narrative design.

Before players step into the shoes of a pirate-turned-captain sailing into Sengoku-era Japan, the development team has to lay the groundwork—and it all starts long before any line of code is written.

Step 1: Digging Through the Archives

To build an authentic world, Campfire Cabal starts with rigorous historical research. Creating an Expeditions game isn’t just about looking up high-level dates on Wikipedia; it involves:

    • Sifting through library books and historical texts: Uncovering the daily realities, politics, weapon styles, and social hierarchies of 17th-century Japan.
    • Double-checking original sources: Verifying details to ensure the setting feels grounded in reality rather than clichés.
    • Consulting subject-matter experts: Working alongside historical consultants to capture the true atmosphere, tone, and cultural nuances of the era.

By establishing a factual baseline, the developers ensure that every town, faction, and companion feels historically resonant.

Step 2: Setting the Stage for Alternate History

While the world itself is rooted in history, Expeditions: Samurai gives the steering wheel to the player.

The game’s starting point takes real-world events and flips them on their head. In actual history, English navigator William Adams landed in Japan in 1600 and eventually became one of the first foreign samurai. In Expeditions: Samurai, William Adams never leaves England—allowing you to beat him to the punch aboard the Dutch frigate De Albatros.

By building an ultra-accurate foundation first, Campfire Cabal creates a sandbox where your decisions carry real weight. When you make a choice that alters the course of local politics, changes the fate of a powerful warlord, or impacts your crew, it feels impactful because the world around you reacts logically to historical context.

Step 3: Rewriting History in Your Own Image

Whether you navigate Sengoku-era political intrigue through stealth, diplomacy, or turn-based combat, the game lets you mould your own destiny. With deeply branching storylines, 8 dynamic companions, and drop-in/drop-out co-op, Expeditions: Samurai turns rigorous research into an interactive playground.

Campfire Cabal’s dedication to historical authenticity ensures that every choice you make feels rooted in a living, breathing world—giving you the ultimate setup to rewrite history on your own terms.

Are you excited to set sail for feudal Japan? How do you plan to handle the warring factions of Sengoku-era Japan? Let us know in the comments below!

  • Forget Dialogue Wheels: Free AI RPG Demo OMEA: Odin’s Trial Hits Steam Today

Forget Dialogue Wheels: Free AI RPG Demo OMEA: Odin’s Trial Hits Steam Today

Imagine stepping into a RPG where you aren’t limited to four pre-scripted dialogue choices. You don’t have to click an option on a wheel, guess which vague prompt leads to an argument, or bump against invisible walls. You simply speak—or type—what you want your character to do in your own words, and the story dynamically adapts around you.

That isn’t a distant promise for the future of gaming. AImmersive Inc. has officially launched a free Steam demo for OMEA, titled Odin’s Trial, giving players their first taste of a whole new genre of interactive narrative gaming.

Here is everything you need to know about the free demo and why OMEA might just change how we play story-driven games forever.

    What is OMEA: Odin’s Trial?

In Odin’s Trial, you take on the role of a Viking who has washed up alone on a brutal, frozen island. Given one single directive from Odin—find and kill “The Beast”—you are thrown into a fight for survival. The sub-zero climate wants you dead, the wildlife is vicious, and the locals aren’t overly friendly either. You’ll need shelter, fire, and sharp wits just to survive your first hour.

Unlike traditional text-adventures or RPGs, OMEA has no set input menus. Want to attempt to intimidate a hostile warrior using a piece of scrap metal you found on the beach? Say it. Want to bluff your way into a shelter, build a makeshift trap, or run for your life? Type it out. The AI acts as a digital Dungeon Master, processing natural language and turning your intent into the next beat of the narrative in real-time.

To elevate the experience, your emergent playthrough is fully voiced, illustrated on the fly, and accompanied by live, dynamic background scoring and sound effects.

How OMEA Fixes the “AI Chatbot” Problem

If you’ve ever messed around with generic AI narrative tools, you know the frustrating routine: after 15 minutes of play, the system forgets who you are, breaks character, hallucinates wild contradictions, or aimlessly wanders without ever reaching a proper ending.

AImmersive Inc. set out to fix this exact issue. Built on a proprietary Narrative Intelligence Architecture (NIA)—a custom model trained on over 150,000 novels—OMEA is explicitly engineered around story structure, pacing, and emotional consistency.

Key highlights of the system include:

    • Persistent Memory & Consequence: Nothing resets between scenes. If you help a stranger early in the demo, she might block a spear for you hours later. If you break a promise, the island’s inhabitants won’t forget it.
    • Skill Checks & Dice Rolls: You aren’t playing as an invincible god. When an action is risky—like swinging an axe on a slippery ice ledge—the game calculates skill checks and dice rolls behind the scenes. Even the best-laid plans can fall apart.
    • Crafted World-Building: Rather than relying on pure procedural random generation, professional writers and game designers crafted the lore, characters, and stakes. The AI simply manages the infinite branching pathways that result from your decisions.

Play Odin’s Trial Free on Steam Right Now

Whether you want to try outwitting the islanders, face off against mythical horrors, or test the limits of what an AI Game Master can handle, OMEA: Odin’s Trial is available to play for free today.

The demo runs natively on Windows, macOS, and Steam Deck, supporting both voice-to-text microphone input and standard keyboard typing.

If you’re a fan of story-rich RPGs, tabletop Dungeons & Dragons, or choice-driven visual novels, head over to Steam, download the free demo, and test your fate in the frozen north.

Have you given the OMEA demo a spin yet? Did you defeat the Beast, or did the cold take you first? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Desk Job Derby: Kartboard Dash Turns Your Office Supplies into Weapons of Chaos

We’ve all had those days at the office. You’re staring at a spreadsheet, your coffee is lukewarm, and you secretly wish you could hurl a stapler at your boss or launch a rubber band barrage across the cubicles.

Well, the indie developers at Zatun heard your silent corporate screams. Get ready to trade your ergonomic chair for a motorised cardboard box, because the ultimate workplace racing riot is officially on the horizon in the new game Kartboard Dash.

The Premise: The Cubicle is Your Racetrack

Kartboard Dash is a chaotic, fast-paced arcade kart racer that takes place entirely within the confines of a sprawling, highly detailed corporate office. The tracks weave through cluttered desks, dangerous breakrooms, treacherous copy machine corridors, and the dreaded executive boardroom.

You play as various stressed-out office archetypes—from the overworked intern to the power-tripping middle manager—all racing for the ultimate prize: getting your weekend PTO approved.

    The Arsenal: Desktop Warfare

What sets Kartboard Dash apart from your standard kart racer is its brilliant, hilarious weaponry. Forget red shells and banana peels; this game turns standard-issue stationery into tools of absolute destruction.

    • The Stapler Shotgun: Blast a spread of heavy-duty staples to spin out rivals right before the finish line.
    • The Rubber Band Slingshot: Snare the racer ahead of you and slingshot past them using pure kinetic tension.
    • The Hot Coffee Slick: Blind your opponents or make them slide uncontrollably across the polished linoleum floors.
    • The Post-it Note Smoke Screen: Plaster a rival’s screen with neon sticky notes to completely block their view.

    High-Octane Customization

Half the fun is building your ride. Players start with a basic cardboard Amazon delivery box and can unlock upgrades using “Company Credits” earned during races.

Want to attach rolling office chair wheels for better drifting? Do it. Want to strap a leaf-blower to the back for a nitrous boost? Go right ahead. You can even customise your driver with ridiculous corporate attire, from coffee-stained ties to full business-casual armour.

    Why It’s on Our Radar

Aside from the relatable and funny concept, the game features incredibly tight drifting mechanics, satisfying physics, and an absolute banger of a lo-fi/synth-wave soundtrack that mimics elevator music on steroids.

  • The Stanley Parable With a Loaded Rifle: ‘War Fantasy’ is the Ultimate Technophobic Mindfk

The Stanley Parable With a Loaded Rifle: ‘War Fantasy’ is the Ultimate Technophobic Mindfk

The modern military shooter has a formula. You drop in, follow the waypoint, shoot the bad guys, and feel like an absolute hero. But a freshly dropped announcement trailer from indie developer Non-Euclidean is about to violently tear up that script.

Enter War Fantasy, an upcoming psychological horror FPS that aims to systematically dismantle the genre. Described by its creators as “The Stanley Parable with a loaded rifle,” this title is a deeply unsettling, technophobic dive into how the line between military simulations and real-world warfare has completely dissolved.

Check out the trailer breakdown below and see why this game is already messing with the heads of FPS fans.

Psychological Conditioning as a Gameplay Mechanic

Instead of stepping into the combat boots of a glorified action hero, War Fantasy casts you as a blank slate being systematically broken down. You are trapped inside an infinite military training compound under the thumb of a demented, emotionally abusive commanding officer who watches, logs, and analyses your every move.

The horror here isn’t jump scares; it’s the insidious psychological pressure. Every shot you fire, every order you blindly follow, and every second you spend hesitating is fed back into a cold, uncaring algorithm designed to strip away your humanity.

The game draws a direct line from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket straight to the modern military shooter, forcing players to ask a terrifying question: What have video games actually been training us for?

    Navigating the Impossible: Non-Euclidean Terror

True to the developer’s name, the world of War Fantasy doesn’t adhere to standard physics or geometry. As the psychological conditioning intensifies, the physical environment breaks down:

    • Looping Corridors: Hallways that fold in on themselves, trapping you in a perpetual maze of military-industrial architecture.
    • Kaleidoscopic Arenas: Training simulations with no logical exits that shift and reassemble based on your compliance.
    • Hyper-Realistic Weaponry: An incredibly detailed arsenal of modern firearms, drones, and near-future tech. The game intentionally makes the weapons feel real—because authenticity is part of the conditioning.

The game is banking heavily on technophobia, weaponising the player’s choices and behaviours against them. With Steam tags like Narrative, Psychological Horror, and Choices Matter, your attempts to resist or obey will actively shape the nightmare.

Are We Playing Games, or Are Games Playing Us?

What makes War Fantasy look so brilliant—and deeply uncomfortable—is its meta-commentary on the gaming industry itself. It directly targets the normalisation of violence through the gamification of real-world warfare (think drone pilots using controllers).

It isn’t interested in making you feel powerful. It wants you to feel controlled, analysed, and thoroughly trapped inside a machine that won’t let you leave until you’ve been turned into the perfect weapon.

War Fantasy is currently slated for a PC release via Steam, and it’s safe to say our wishlists are already updating. If you’re tired of the same old military power fantasies and want a shooter that will genuinely mess with your head, this is the one to watch.

  • Don’t Touch That Dial: Tequila Works Veterans Reveal Spooky New Title ‘Tuned In’

Don’t Touch That Dial: Tequila Works Veterans Reveal Spooky New Title ‘Tuned In’

The indie gaming landscape just got a major jolt of adrenaline. Vercors Games, a newly formed boutique studio based in Madrid, has officially broken cover to announce its debut title: Tuned In.

If the studio’s name doesn’t ring a bell yet, the pedigree behind it certainly will. Vercors Games features a powerhouse core team composed of senior staff from Tequila Works—the brilliant minds responsible for atmospheric hits like RIME, GYLT, and Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story. If that wasn’t enough star power, they’ve also recruited seasoned industry talent from Airship Syndicate and Blizzard Entertainment.

With a pedigree like that, expectations were always going to be high, and their first teaser does not disappoint.

    A Shifting Anthology of Nightmares

Vercors Games dropped the curtain on Tuned In via a mysterious, deeply unsettling short video hosted on their newly launched Kickstarter pre-campaign page. Check out the teaser below:

The premise is pure, unfiltered psychological dread. In Tuned In, players find themselves trapped by a dark, malevolent entity inside a cursed television broadcast. To survive, you must navigate a sinister lineup of puzzles, endure shifting layers of horror, and make impossible, branching choices.

The core gameplay centres around a fascinatingly tactile mechanic: mastering the controls of an old-school cathode-ray tube (CRT) television to alter the broadcast. As you play, the boundaries of reality and the television signal begin to warp and bleed into one another. You’ll manipulate the dials to encounter, embody, and attempt to save different survivors across an interconnected narrative.

From Gritty Slashers to Folk Horror

Rather than sticking to a single flavour of fear, Vercors Games is building Tuned In as an ever-shifting anthology. Each chapter draws from a completely different horror sub-genre, giving every segment a distinct visual and atmospheric identity.

The studio has promised everything from the gritty, heavy-ink shadows reminiscent of classic 80s slasher films to the muted, grainy, slow-burn textures of atmospheric folk horror. The entire experience is bound together by a gorgeous, hand-drawn graphic novel art style.

    Want to Play It Early?

While the full game is slated for a 2027 release on Steam and Steam Deck, you won’t have to wait that long to get a taste of the nightmare.

Vercors Games has announced that anyone who signs up early on their [Kickstarter Pre-Campaign Page] will receive exclusive, free access to a playable prologue of the game, which is set to drop very shortly.

Between the pedigree of the developers and the brilliant, retro-tv framing device, Tuned In is instantly rocketing to the top of our “ones to watch” list. Head over to their Kickstarter page to secure your prologue access before the broadcast goes live!
