During the recent Midsummer Night’s Scream and AG French Direct events, independent French developer Drop Rate Studio and acclaimed publisher Dear Villagers dropped a massive bombshell: their upcoming 2D Lovecraftian underwater roguelite, Dive or Die: Children of Rain, is officially launching on July 21st, 2026.
The announcement arrived alongside a tense new gameplay trailer, giving us a deeper look into a world completely swallowed by a catastrophic, otherworldly event.
40 Days to Prevent the Final Flood
The premise of Dive or Die is delightfully grim. The world has been entirely drowned by years of an eerie event known as the “Black Rain.” The last remaining remnants of humanity are clinging to survival on a fragile camp above water, but their time is ticking away. An Eldritch Divinity known as the Rainmaker has issued an ultimatum: recover its sacred idols hidden deep within the treacherous “Abyssal Pool” in under 40 days, or face total extinction in a final, absolute flood.
The core gameplay loop splits your time between two equally stressful, high-stakes environments:
- The Surface (Camp Management): Up top, you’re in charge of humanity’s last refuge. You must rebuild vital infrastructure, upgrade diving gear, and assign survivors to roles. But beware—resources are scarce, and you’ll need to make tough, permanent choices about who to protect and who to risk.
- The Depths (The Abyssal Pool): Down below, the game morphs into a nerve-wracking, 2D roguelite. Every plunge is a deadly gamble where you must navigate sunken ruins, manage dwindling oxygen levels, and contend with creeping madness. And yes, there are cosmic, mutated horrors waiting for you in the pitch black.
Following their success with the tactical RPG Wantless, Drop Rate Studio is sticking to their design mantra: creating challenging, deeply mechanical games that heavily reward player investment and strategic prudence.
