Electrifying Terror: Meet Eleanor “Nervous Nellie” Ashford in Rock, Paper, Severed

Content Warning: The following character background contains themes of domestic violence, psychological trauma, child abuse, and murder.

Indie developer Buzzin’ Games has released the fourth and final entry in The Damned Files—their sinister character reveal series for the upcoming psychological horror tabletop strategy game, Rock, Paper, Scissors, Severed.

Joining the previously revealed roster of tortured souls summoned by the mysterious entity known as The Old Sire, players are now introduced to Eleanor “Nellie” Ashford, better known to horror fans and police files alike as “Nervous Nellie.”

The Final Sinner: Who is Nervous Nellie?

Eleanor Ashford’s past reads like a tragic, blood-curdling nightmare. Raised in Liverpool under the strict control of an abusive father—an unlicensed electrician who believed pain equalled discipline—Nellie was subjected to unimaginable cruelty. As a child, crude electrical nodes were permanently fitted to her temples, used to punish her whenever she displeased him.

Her escape seemed possible when she met her fiancé, David. However, when her father attempted to stop the marriage by dragging Nellie back to his cellar chair, something snapped. Nellie fought back, seizing the live wiring and forcing the deadly current through her father, killing him and permanently fusing the electrical nodes into her skull.

Though she initially thought she had secured her freedom, her marriage to David spiralled into familiar domestic violence. When she ultimately killed David in self-defence, her broken mind witnessed a tall, menacing figure standing in the room: The Old Sire.

Driven insane by trauma and newly birthed fanaticism, Nellie became “The Black Widow of Liverpool.” Believing her killings were ritualistic sacrifices to her new God, she left a trail of victims across Liverpool covered in electrical burns before vanishing without a trace.

Now, driven by manic zealotry, Nellie has answered The Old Sire’s final call.

High Stakes and High Tension: What is Rock, Paper, Severed?

Rock, Paper, Severed takes the innocent, universal hand game of Rock, Paper, Scissors and plunges it into a horrifying, high-stakes tabletop nightmare inspired by British folklore and the dark tradition of Sin-Eating.

The rules of the game are ruthlessly simple:

    • The Rules: Face off against desperate opponents around The Old Sire’s table in single-player or multiplayer modes.
    • The Stakes: Every round you lose doesn’t just lower your score—it costs you a finger.
    • The Strategy: Players must read their opponents, utilise strategic items to bend the odds, and survive each brutal throw as options slowly dwindle.

With Nellie Ashford joining Dr. Amy Chen (“Lobot-Amy”) and Edward Mullen (“Metal ‘Ed”), the four playable sinners are officially locked in. Each character brings their own tragic history, guilt, and distinct psychological edge to the table.

    Playable Debut at Gamescom 2026

For gamers attending Gamescom 2026, Buzzin’ Games will be showcasing hands-on playable demos of Rock, Paper, Severed in the B2B area, allowing press and players alike to step up to The Old Sire’s table for the first time.

Rock, Paper, Severed is currently in development for PC. You can head over to Steam today to add it to your wishlist and prepare your hand for the ultimate gamble.

  • Grab Your Crew and Set Sail: Last Pirates: Die Together Brings Hilarious Extraction Horror to Steam!

Grab Your Crew and Set Sail: Last Pirates: Die Together Brings Hilarious Extraction Horror to Steam!

If you thought extraction shooters were strictly about tactical gear and intense firefights, think again. Indie developer RetroStyle Games is turning the genre on its head with a hilarious, physics-fueled twist: Last Pirates: Die Together.

Now available in Early Access on Steam, this 1-to-4 player co-op horror comedy challenges you and your squad to venture into cursed, monster-infested pirate coves to retrieve precious treasure for your demanding captain. The catch? You’ll be doing it with ridiculously long, stretchy physics-based arms, proximity voice chat, and mechanics that make accidental sabotage almost guaranteed.

    Search for Booty—Without Losing Yours!

In Last Pirates: Die Together, the core gameplay loop is as chaotic as it is addictive. You step into the boots of a ragtag crew dropped into dark, trap-laden islands. Your primary objective is simple: gather as much loot as you can carry, dodge bloodthirsty creatures—ranging from giant hooked pirates to terrifying voice-mimicking monsters—and make it back to your ship before your entire team gets wiped out.

What sets this game apart from standard co-op horror titles is its heavy emphasis on dark humour and slapstick physics.

    • Elongated Elastic Arms: Forget standard inventories. You’ll be using wildly stretchy limbs to reach, grab, drag, and haul massive pieces of treasure across treacherous terrain—which is much easier said than done when ragdoll physics take over.
    • Literally Protect Your Booty: In a cheeky twist on classic revival mechanics, losing your health means losing your “booty.” Teammates will have to help you retrieve it (or replace it!) to bring you back into the action.
    • Proximity Voice Chat: Coordinate tactical moves with your friends, or listen in utter panic as their distant screams fade out when a monster strikes from the shadows.
    • Upgrades & Customisation: Between runs, use your hard-earned gold to buy cosmetics, equip weapons to fight back, or unlock ridiculous upgrades like expanding your hand size to carry extra coins or lengthening your arms to grab distant loot.

Whether you’re playing carefully as a team or accidentally hurling your crewmates off a cliff while trying to haul a heavy chest, no two runs feel the same.

Early Access Pricing and Launch Discount

Following a massively successful public demo that racked up hundreds of thousands of players, Last Pirates: Die Together has officially entered Steam Early Access.

You can pick up the game right now on Steam for just $7.99 (regional pricing may vary). Even better, to celebrate the game’s launch, you can grab a 20% launch discount for the first two weeks!

Step Aboard the Nightmare: Horror Game ‘SENARA: The Sacrament’ Launches on Steam

If you are a fan of claustrophobic atmospheres, inventory management, and classic survival horror mechanics, indie developer Influsion Inc. has a brand-new voyage tailor-made for your worst nightmares.

Their first-person survival horror game, SENARA: The Sacrament, has officially set sail today on PC via Steam for $17.99 / £15.99 / €18.25.

Nautical Terror Meets Classic Survival Horror

Set aboard the Senara—a sprawling, 6,000-ton derelict ocean liner teetering on the edge of utter ruin—players step into the shoes of a recruit caught up in a mysterious, cult-like religious organisation. After setting out to sea, you wake up to find the crew mysteriously vanished, cult rituals left behind, and grotesque monstrosities stalking the dimly lit corridors.

Rather than relying purely on modern action tropes, SENARA: The Sacrament pays homage to the golden age of survival horror (think classic Resident Evil and Silent Hill):

    • Escape Room Level Design: The vessel operates as a massive, interconnected labyrinth. You’ll need to search for keys, decode complex puzzles, and uncover hidden passages to navigate the vessel’s deck levels.
    • Tense Resource Management: Weapons and ammunition are extremely limited. You’ll constantly have to decide whether to stand your ground, hide using stealth, or run for your life.
    • Hyper-Realistic Setting: Influsion Inc. utilised LiDAR scanning and photogrammetry techniques on a real-life ocean liner to give every rusted steel door and decaying cabin documentary-level fidelity.
    • Player Choice & Branching Endings: The mystery of the ship isn’t spoon-fed to you. Scattered documents, environmental clues, and critical narrative choices determine how you piece together the cult’s forbidden truths—ultimately shaping the fate of your escape and unlocking multiple distinct endings.

  • Escape the Mansion from Your Couch: Dead Estate Slams Onto PS5 and Nintendo Switch

Escape the Mansion from Your Couch: Dead Estate Slams Onto PS5 and Nintendo Switch

If you’ve been itching for a gory, high-octane indie treat to play on the move or from the comfort of your living room, your prayers to the horror gods have officially been answered. Dead Estate, the cult-hit horror-themed action roguelike developed by Milkbar Lads and published by 2 Left Thumbs, has officially made its grand debut on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch!

Originally launched on PC back in 2021 where it amassed a fiercely loyal, “Very Positive” following, this delightfully chunky, fast-paced top-down shooter is ready to tear up your console storage.

    What is Dead Estate?

Imagine a love letter to classic 90s horror, smashed together with the tight, frenetic twin-stick shooting of Enter the Gungeon and wrapped in stunning, fluid pixel art. That is Dead Estate.

Players are trapped in a massive, shifting, monster-filled mansion. Your only goal? Ascend the floors, hoard a ridiculous arsenal of weaponry, and try desperately not to get ripped to shreds by the local undead populace.

But there’s a catch: if you take too long exploring a floor, you’ll be relentlessly hunted by Chunks—a massive, terrifying stalker enemy who gives off heavy Resident Evil Nemesis vibes. You can either run for your life or pump enough lead into him to force a temporary retreat and claim a hefty cash reward.

    Packed with the Definitive Content

The best part about this console launch? Switch and PS5 players are getting the complete package right out of the gate. The ports include all five of the massive major content updates released during the game’s PC lifecycle, up to the definitive “Goodnight” update.

Here is a quick look at what you’re getting yourself into:

    • 10 Playable Characters: From Jeff the default grunt to Cordelia the witch and Fuji the boxer, every character completely alters your playstyle, movement speed, and starting stats.
    • Insane Variety: Over 150 weapons and 300 passive items to create absolutely broken, god-tier synergies.
    • The “Assignment Anya” Campaign: A separate, survival-horror-inspired campaign that serves as a direct, brilliant nod to Resident Evil 4’s Assignment Ada.
    • Console-Specific Enhancements: Deeply polished NewGame+ modes, unlockable challenges, and full couch-to-toilet portability on the Nintendo Switch (with built-in compatibility for next-gen hardware down the line).

The Verdict: A Must-Play for Roguelike Fans

What makes Dead Estate special is how rewarding it feels. While it offers plenty of gruelling difficulty modifiers and “Blessing & Curse” runs for hardcore genre purists, it also allows casual players to stumble into incredibly fun, overpowered item combinations that let you utterly eviscerate late-game rooms.

The isometric rooms are compact, forcing you into tense, close-quarters bullet hells. Combined with a killer, atmospheric synth soundtrack and unmatched character design, it’s the ultimate pick-up-and-play title for your console library.

Dead Estate is available right now on the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop for $14.99 / £11.99. Go grab your weapon of choice, keep an eye out for Chunks, and see if you can survive the night!

  • Step into the Dark: Ancient Witchcraft and Psychological Terror Await in ‘Escape From Umbra’

Step into the Dark: Ancient Witchcraft and Psychological Terror Await in ‘Escape From Umbra’

Indie horror fans, it is time to charge your batteries and prepare for a serious spike in your heart rate. Veteran independent studio WildSphere—the brilliant minds behind the terrifying Oxide Room 104—has officially unleashed its latest nightmare onto the world.

Their highly anticipated survival horror and puzzle title, Escape From Umbra, is now available for purchase across all major console and PC digital platforms. If you have been looking for a horror game that prioritises thick, suffocating atmosphere and clever puzzle-solving over mindless jump scares, this is the one to put on your radar.

    The Nightmare of Umbra’s Domain

Escape From Umbra drops you headfirst into a dark, psychological thriller inspired by ancient mountain witch legends. What was supposed to be a happy birthday getaway in a vacation home quickly devolves into a terrifying reality. You find yourself trapped in a labyrinthine, fog-drenched village inspired by the real-world mountain towns of Las Alpujarras, painstakingly brought to life in gorgeous, eerie detail via Unreal Engine 5.

The catch? The village is ruled by a relentless witch named Umbra, who is actively hunting you down to consume your soul.

    True “Escape Room” Mechanics

WildSphere is completely stripping away the traditional video game safety nets here. You won’t find floating backpacks, oversized HUDs, or artificial inventory screens. Escape From Umbra plays out like a literal 3D escape room.

You must physically investigate the environment, manipulate objects in 3D space, and piece together how to use them to break out of each area. Your only guide is a cryptic journal filled with riddles and logic-based clues. You will have to rely entirely on your own wits to find a path to freedom.

Friend or Foe? The Mechanics of the Dark

Surviving the village requires masterfully balancing your very limited resources:

    • The Flashlight: Your beam illuminates the pitch-black streets and can unleash a powerful burst of energy to temporarily blind the spectres patrolling the town. However, light attracts unwanted attention, and your battery life is always ticking down.
    • The Shadow Creatures: The witch’s spectres are alert to the slightest hint of light. If you hear the roots of the village creaking, you need to kill your flashlight, break the line of sight, and hide immediately.
    • The Black Cats: In a world filled with shifting shadows and frozen magic mirrors, keep an eye out for enigmatic black cats. When you see them, trust them—they serve as your guide through the darkness.

Next-Gen Immersion: If you are playing on the PlayStation 5, the game takes immersion to a whole new level. The flashlight mechanics utilize adaptive triggers for added realism, and there are no on-screen health or danger indicators. Instead, the controller’s haptic feedback transmits your character’s heartbeat directly to your hands—accelerating chaotically as your only radar when danger is closing in.

    Out Now on All Platforms

Whether you prefer PC gaming or couch-crusading on consoles, WildSphere has you covered. Escape From Umbra has launched simultaneously on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Steam, and GOG.

If you are still on the fence about whether you can handle the dark, a limited-time 10-15 minute playable demo is currently available on Steam and GOG so you can test your nerves before you buy.

Do you have what it takes to decipher the clues, avoid the witch, and escape the shadows? Grab your copy today and find out.

The Entity Demands Metal: Ice Nine Kills Enter the Fog with ‘Play Dead’ Crossover

Horror-metal titans Ice Nine Kills (INK) have officially entered the Fog. In a massive cross-media collision, the band has unleashed “Play Dead,” a ferocious new single and accompanying music video created in direct collaboration with Dead by Daylight, the world’s leading multiplayer horror game.

Written specifically to celebrate Dead by Daylight’s milestone 10th Anniversary, the track merges two massive, genre-obsessed universes built entirely on suspense, survival, and the thrill of the kill.

Check out everything you need to know about this brutal new crossover.

A Collision of Hooks and Horror

To ensure the track stayed authentically tethered to the game’s spine-chilling atmosphere, Ice Nine Kills mastermind Spencer Charnas joined forces with longtime Dead by Daylight composer Michel F. April. The result is a chaotic masterclass in metalcore, blending the game’s eerie, immersive energy with INK’s signature theatrical breakdowns and razor-sharp hooks.

“Ice Nine Kills has always lived somewhere between menace and mischief,” shares Charnas. “’Play Dead,’ our take on Dead by Daylight, is a collision of hooks, horror, and total chaos. As lifelong horror fans, we find it surreal and an absolute honor to have Ice Nine Kills’ music officially tied to Terrifier, Scream, Ready or Not, and now, the iconic survival horror game Dead by Daylight.”

Watch the Music Video (Featuring Some Very Familiar Faces)

True to Ice Nine Kills fashion, the cinematic music video doesn’t just deliver on gore—it expands the band’s ongoing lore with an unbelievable roster of guest stars.

Knowledge Over Keys: Castlevania Meets Tunic in Vampire Hunter: Nightrise

The vampire genre is getting a serious injection of fresh blood this summer. Independent developer and publisher Over the Moon—the talented team behind critically acclaimed titles like The Fall and The Last Hero of Nostalgaia—has officially announced their next project.

Prepare your stakes: Vampire Hunter: Nightrise is officially locking in its launch for July 14, 2026, on Steam for just $14.99.

If you are tired of sprawling, bloated open-world games and want a tight, atmospheric experience that respects your time, this is one indie title you need on your radar.

The Castle is Your Real Opponent

Pitched by the developers as a first-person “Castlevania meets Tunic” (with a healthy dash of Outer Wilds), Vampire Hunter: Nightrise drops you into a massive, shifting Gothic fortress. Your goal is simple: navigate the labyrinth and slay the vampire before nightfall.

The twist? The castle itself is actively trying to outsmart you.

    • No Arbitrary Keys: Forget backtracking to find a blue keycard or a rusted iron key. In Nightrise, almost every area is accessible from the very beginning. The only barrier to entry is your own understanding.
    • A Shifting Labyrinth: The fortress is alive. Fireplaces rotate, bookcases slide out of view, watching portraits reveal hidden paths, and staircases completely reshape themselves. You have to master the mechanics of the architecture to survive.
    • Scavenge & Craft: In tense, first-person combat, you’ll utilise a heavy stake launcher to pin enemies to walls or shoot through open flames to ignite your targets. Running low on ammo? Just smash the castle’s wooden furniture to craft more stakes on the fly.

A Unique Mechanic: Faith as a Finite Resource

Historically, fictional vampire hunters rely on a crucifix and pure willpower. Nightrise takes that trope and turns it into a core gameplay mechanic.

In this game, Faith is a literal, finite resource that you must manage just as carefully as your physical ammunition. As you navigate the terrifying halls, the castle will actively try to erode your conviction, tempting you to trade your faith away in exchange for dark, immediate power. Every compromise and bargain you strike will subtly alter your survival chances and shape how the story concludes.

It delivers a focused, dread-inducing psychological atmosphere that clocks in at around three hours—making it the perfect, no-filler narrative game to tackle in a single, intense sitting.
