Rhianna Pratchett Dives Deep into the Narrative Design of ‘Life Below’

With the launch of Life Below just around the corner on May 26th, developer Megapop and publisher Kasedo Games have surfaced a new behind-the-scenes look at the game’s narrative. This latest developer diary features award-winning writer Rhianna Pratchett (Tomb Raider, Mirror’s Edge), who discusses how the studio is blending hard-hitting environmental themes with a character-driven story.

A Different Kind of City Builder

Unlike your typical urban planner, Life Below tasks you with being a “Reef Builder.” You take on the role of Thalassa, a guardian tasked with restoring a dying coral reef. The game isn’t just about placing structures; it’s about managing a delicate ecosystem where every choice affects biodiversity and resilience against external threats.

Key Narrative Insights from Rhianna Pratchett

Pratchett, a hobby diver herself, brings a personal passion for marine life to the project. Here are the highlights from the new video:

    • Subtle Storytelling: Rather than “finger-wagging” at players about human impact, the game uses environmental storytelling. You’ll see the consequences of surface-dweller actions—like drifting debris or warming waters—through the eyes of those living in the reef.
    • Character Dynamics: The story focuses on the relationship between Thalassa and her begrudging mentor, Pontus. Pratchett emphasised creating a peer-to-peer connection where characters can grow together while facing the collapse of their world.
    • A Message of Hope: Despite the heavy themes of coral bleaching and pollution, the core of the narrative is about nurturing. It’s a story about how even those who feel their time has passed can still make a meaningful difference.

“It’s about nurturing, for both the reef and the characters. There’s always a way forward, always something you can do to help or change your circumstances. That felt like a powerful message to explore.” — Rhianna Pratchett

What to Expect on May 26th

Developed in collaboration with marine biologists, Life Below promises a “Triple I” experience that balances scientific realism with engaging strategy.

Diving Deep into “Life Below”: A Review of the Subaquatic Survival Sim

The ocean depths have always held a powerful allure – a mysterious, beautiful, and often terrifying world hidden beneath the waves. While many games let us explore digital terrestrial landscapes, “Life Below” plunges us headfirst into the crushing pressure and dark wonders of an alien, underwater environment. If you’re a fan of survival games, resource management, and a healthy dose of existential dread, prepare to hold your breath.

A World of Wonder and Peril

“Life Below” doesn’t waste time with elaborate backstories. You awaken in a small, damaged submersible, stranded hundreds of meters beneath the surface. Your immediate goals are clear: survive. This involves repairing your sub, managing oxygen and power, and venturing out into the abyss to scavenge resources. And what an abyss it is! The game’s procedural generation ensures each playthrough feels fresh, offering vast caverns, bioluminescent coral reefs, and ancient, sunken structures.

The visual design is where “Life Below” truly shines. The play of light filtering down from distant surfaces, the eerie glow of deep-sea creatures, and the sheer scale of the underwater landscapes create an atmosphere that is both breathtaking and oppressive.
