If you thought Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG) Studio was content just giving us more neon-soaked street fights in modern-day Kamurocho, think again. During the latest Xbox Partner Preview, Sega and Microsoft finally pulled back the curtain on the project formerly known as Project Century.
Now officially titled Stranger Than Heaven, this isn’t just another spin-off—it’s a massive, multi-generational epic that feels like the most ambitious swing Sega has taken in a decade.
Five Eras, Five Cities, One Massive Mystery
The headline news from the reveal is the game’s staggering scope. Unlike the dense, single-neighbourhood focus of the Like a Dragon series, Stranger Than Heaven spans a 50-year history of the Japanese underworld. We’re talking about five distinct time periods:
1915: The dawn of the Taisho era.
1929: Pre-war tension and jazz-age aesthetic.
1943: The height of WWII (a bold and rare setting for RGG).
1951: Post-war reconstruction and the rise of the black markets.
1965: The classic “Showy” era of the Japanese economic miracle.
Each era will reportedly feature its own unique Japanese city. While RGG is famous for reusing assets to keep their release schedule fast, the trailer showed off entirely new bespoke assets, from period-accurate trams to era-specific fighting animations.
A “Stranger” Kind of Combat
The gameplay footage showcased a brutal, highly dynamic combat system. It looks like an evolution of the RGG brawler DNA, but with a much heavier emphasis on:
Weaponry: Era-appropriate tools of the trade.
Environmental Interaction: Think less of “picking up a bicycle” and more of using the literal architecture of the time to your advantage.
One-vs-Many: The scale of the brawls looked significantly larger than what we’ve seen in recent titles.
The Microsoft Connection: Day One on Game Pass
The “special relationship” between Sega and Microsoft continues to bear fruit. Microsoft confirmed that Stranger Than Heaven will be a Day One Xbox Game Pass title. It also supports Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning a single purchase gets you the game on both Series X|S and PC with cross-save functionality.
Note: While Microsoft is heavily marketing the game, it is not exclusive. It will also be launching on PlayStation 5 and Steam.
