Press Play on Nostalgia: Why ‘Mixtape’ is the Ultimate Gen-X and Millennial Fever Dream

If you’ve ever felt the specific, tactile joy of winding a loose cassette tape with a pencil, or the gut-punch realisation that high school was actually a lifetime ago, then Mixtape is calling your name.

Developed by Beethoven & Dinosaur (the visionaries behind The Artful Escape) and published by the vibe-masters at Annapurna Interactive, Mixtape has finally arrived. It’s not just a game; it’s a playable highlight reel of teenage rebellion, suburban boredom, and the music that made us.

The Plot: One Last Ride Before Reality Hits

Set on the final night of high school, the story follows three best friends—Enzo, Nital, and Jo—as they trek to one last party. But this isn’t a standard walk-and-talk adventure.

As the trio listens to their “Final Graduation Mixtape,” the music pulls them into vivid, playable memories. One moment you’re walking down a quiet street; the next, you’re soaring through a dreamscape fueled by the soaring synths of the 80s and 90s. It captures that “Big Suck”—that specific feeling of being stuck in a small town while yearning for the world to start.

    The Soundtrack: A Licensed Masterclass

Let’s be honest: a game called Mixtape lives or dies by its tracklist. Fortunately, the developers went all-out. We’re talking about a lineup that feels like a curated “Best of Alt-Rock” collection:

    • DEVO
    • The Smashing Pumpkins
    • Iggy Pop
    • Siouxsie and the Banshees
    • Joy Division
    • The Psychedelic Furs

The gameplay shifts styles to match the rhythm of these tracks. You’ll find yourself skateboarding, graffitiing, and even engaging in light platforming, all choreographed to a soundtrack that defines “cool.”

    Visuals: Like a Living Scrapbook

The art direction is nothing short of breathtaking. It abandons hyper-realism for a lush, cinematic style that feels like a mix of stop-motion animation and a vintage Polaroid. Every frame looks like it could be an indie movie poster from 1994.

The character movements have a slight “jitter” to them—a deliberate choice that mimics the imperfections of old film and adds to the dreamlike, memory-focused atmosphere.

Why You Need to Play It

Mixtape doesn’t demand 100 hours of your time or ask you to grind for loot. It asks you to feel. It’s a vignettes-based journey that prioritises “vibe” and emotional resonance over complex mechanics.

    Quick Stats for Gamers:

    Final Thoughts

Mixtape is a love letter to the era of physical media and the friendships that felt like they’d last forever. It’s short, punchy, and emotionally resonant. If you have Xbox Game Pass, there is zero excuse to miss this—it’s the perfect “one-sitting” game for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

TechMash Verdict: A visual and auditory masterpiece that proves games can be just as poetic as the songs we grew up with. 9/10

Their high-octane, neon-drenched brawler Dead As Disco has officially launched into Early Access today, and it’s available right now on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

At its core, Dead As Disco is a “Beat Kune Do” experience—a literal beat-’em-up where every punch, kick, and combo is choreographed to a pulsing soundtrack. It’s martial arts meets music video, and it’s every bit as stylish as it sounds.

The Story: Revenge is a Remix

You play as Charlie Disco, a fallen music icon who has returned from the grave for one night of ultimate retribution. Your targets? The Idols—your former bandmates who sold out and left you behind. To reclaim your legacy, you’ll have to fight through a world torn apart by fame and betrayal, taking down your ex-friends in massive, music-synced boss battles.

    Key Features at Launch

    • Rhythm-Driven Violence: Combat isn’t just about button-mashing; it’s about timing. Attacks, dodges, and finishers sync seamlessly to the beat, turning every encounter into a deadly dance.
    • “My Music” Integration: Want to fight for your own playlist? The game’s My Music feature allows you to import your own tracks, which the game then converts into custom challenges.
    • Massive Soundtrack: The Early Access launch includes over 30 songs, featuring a mix of licensed bangers and a high-energy, streamer-safe original OST.
    • Progressive Power-Ups: As you defeat the Idols (like Hemlock and Dex), you unlock their signature abilities and expand your own skill tree, growing stronger with every “encore.”

    Early Access: The Opening Act

Brain Jar Games has made it clear that this is just the beginning. The current version offers hours of gameplay, the first arc of the narrative campaign, and the Infinite Disco wave mode. Over the next year, the studio plans to add:

    • New Boss Idols and story chapters.
    • Multiplayer Co-op (a highly anticipated feature currently in development).
    • Automatic BPM detection for custom music.
    • Expanded “Rockstar Customisation” for your character and your home-base dive bar, The Encore.

TechMash Tip: If you’re looking to grab it early, the game is currently holding a 20% launch discount on both Steam and Epic, bringing the price down to around £19.99 / $19.99 for the first two weeks.

  • Spin the Black Circle: Cosy-Punk Sim ‘Wax Heads’ Drops Today!

Spin the Black Circle: Cosy-Punk Sim ‘Wax Heads’ Drops Today!

Dust off your turntable and grab your cleaning cloth—the record store of your dreams is officially open for business. Indie developer Patattie Games and publisher Curve Games have announced that Wax Heads, the highly anticipated “cosy-punk” record shop sim, has officially launched today on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

If you’ve ever spent an afternoon digging through crates of vinyl or argued passionately about why a B-side is better than the hit single, this is the game you’ve been waiting for.

    What is Wax Heads?

Set in the iconic (and slightly struggling) Repeater Records, Wax Heads puts you behind the counter as the newest employee of a local institution. This isn’t just a management sim; it’s a narrative-driven “love letter to music culture” that captures the messy, beautiful, and community-driven heart of physical media.

As the shop’s latest hire, you’ll be tasked with:

    • Deciphering Customer Requests: Not everyone knows what they’re looking for. You’ll need to use your musical intuition to help eccentric patrons find that one specific record based on vague descriptions and personal vibes.
    • Exploring a Handcrafted Catalogue: The game features over 50 unique, fictional records with original artwork and lore. You’ll dive deep into the backstories of bands and the drama that keeps the local scene alive.
    • Saving the Shop: It’s not all chill beats and coffee. Repeater Records is facing the looming threat of corporate takeover and gentrification. It’s up to you and your ragtag crew of coworkers to prove that the shop is a community pillar worth fighting for.

    The “Cosy-Punk” Aesthetic

What exactly is “cosy-punk”? Imagine the warm, fuzzy feeling of a neighbourhood hangout blended with the rebellious, DIY spirit of the underground music scene. Wax Heads features a bold, chunky comic-book art style and a soundtrack of 100% original music that spans genres from garage rock to synth-pop.

It’s a game that values human connection over profit margins. You’ll spend as much time chatting with your coworkers—like the activist zine-maker Paul or the band manager Abi—as you will filing LPs.

“With Wax Heads, we’re bringing back the magic of human connection in music. We want to celebrate and reignite the passion that is discovering music in a physical space.”

Murray Somerwolff, Creative Director at Patattie Games

  • From Game Jams to AAA: Muscle Cat Unveils ‘Alawon: Life of a Game Composer’

From Game Jams to AAA: Muscle Cat Unveils ‘Alawon: Life of a Game Composer’

The dream of scoring the next Elden Ring or Stardew Valley just got a lot more tangible—virtually, at least. Independent developer Muscle Cat has officially pulled back the curtain on Alawon: Life of a Game Composer, a deep-dive life simulation game that challenges players to navigate the turbulent waters of the game audio industry.

Announced as a standout feature of the InterfaceX26 Steam Festival, Alawon isn’t just a management sim; it’s a creative toolset wrapped in a narrative that hits close to home for anyone in the gig economy.

    Compose, Export, and Conquer

The most striking feature of Alawon is its functional in-game Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). This isn’t just a rhythm minigame; it’s an intuitive composition tool that allows players to build beats, chords, and melodies.

The coolest part? You aren’t just making music for your virtual character. The game allows you to export your original tracks to use in the real world. Whether you’re building a portfolio or just want to share your creations on social media, the line between gameplay and actual music production is thinner than ever.

    The Hustle is Real

Your journey begins in a cramped bedroom setup, taking on indie game jams to build your reputation. As you progress toward high-stakes AAA projects, you’ll need to balance more than just your MIDI tracks. The game features a “Needs” system that tracks:

    • Energy & Hunger: Working through the night has consequences.
    • Stress: Managing tight deadlines and demanding directors.
    • Inspiration: You can’t force art—sometimes you need to step away from the screen.

A World of Relationships and Ethics

Beyond the studio, Alawon is a living simulation. You’ll navigate a vibrant world filled with NPCs, industry events, and live shows. The game also promises a “mature” narrative, featuring romance and complex character-driven stories.

Interestingly, Muscle Cat is injecting some contemporary social commentary into the mix. The story explores a changing industry landscape shaped by generative AI and cryptocurrency. Players will have to decide whether to embrace these new technologies to get ahead or resist them to protect the “soul” of their craft—decisions that will ultimately shape the game’s multiple endings.

    Coming Soon to PC

While a firm release date hasn’t been locked in yet, Alawon: Life of a Game Composer is currently slated for PC and Linux.

“Alawon is an expression of my own musical journey,” says the developer. “I wanted to make a game that inspires creativity and captures the feeling of building something meaningful through hard work.”

With its unique blend of The Sims-style management and legitimate music production tools, Alawon looks to be a must-play for aspiring musicians and simulation fans alike.

Are you ready to trade your sleep for a hit soundtrack? Stay tuned to TechMash for more updates as we get closer to launch.

  • Rhythm and Reflexes: SHIKA-Q Brings High-Octane Puzzle Battles to EVO Japan 2026

Rhythm and Reflexes: SHIKA-Q Brings High-Octane Puzzle Battles to EVO Japan 2026

The Evolution Championship Series (EVO) is usually the domain of frame-perfect fireballs and high-stakes grapples. But at EVO Japan 2026, a different kind of combat is set to steal the spotlight. AGNI-FLARE CO., LTD. has officially announced that their fast-paced, music-driven puzzle battler, SHIKA-Q, will be making its competitive debut in an upcoming side event.

    What is SHIKA-Q?

If you think “puzzle game” means slowly rotating blocks in a quiet vacuum, think again. SHIKA-Q is a high-octane PvP experience that feels more like a fighting game than a traditional puzzler. Played on a 10×10 board, the game ditches falling blocks entirely. Instead, players rotate and place shaped tiles to form “Links.”

It’s a game of territory, speed, and mental gymnastics. You aren’t just clearing lines; you are fighting for board control, managing attacks, and executing special moves—all in real-time.

    The Beat of the Battle

What truly sets SHIKA-Q apart from the pack—and likely why it’s gaining traction in the competitive scene—is its deep integration with music.

    • Vocal Tracks: The game features over 30 fully voiced tracks that aren’t just background noise; they are the heart of the experience.
    • Audio-Visual Sync: Every move, link, and attack is synchronised with the rhythm, creating a high-pressure flow state that keeps players locked in.
    • Dynamic Atmosphere: As the match intensifies, the music evolves, amplifying the tension as you and your opponent trade blows.

    SHIKA-Q at EVO Japan 2026

The SHIKA-Q World Link Tournament is scheduled to take place on May 3, 2026, as a side event at the legendary Tokyo Big Sight.

While the main stage at EVO Japan features heavy hitters like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, the inclusion of SHIKA-Q highlights a growing trend in the FGC (Fighting Game Community): the appreciation for high-skill, head-to-head competitive titles regardless of genre.

Registration Note: For those in Tokyo (or planning a last-minute flight), registrations for the SHIKA-Q World Link Tournament are open until May 2 at 6:00 PM JST.

    Where to Play

If you want to sharpen your skills before the next tournament, SHIKA-Q is currently available on:

    • Nintendo Switch
    • PlayStation 5 / PlayStation 4
    • PC (via Steam)

With a Challenge Mode featuring 99 stages for solo practice and a robust Ranked Match system, there is plenty of room to master the “Link” system before the next major event.

Whether you’re a puzzle veteran or a fighting game enthusiast looking for a new way to test your reflexes, SHIKA-Q is proving that the most intense battles don’t always require a health bar—sometimes, they just require a beat.

Stay tuned to techmash.co.uk for more updates on EVO Japan 2026 and the latest indie competitive gems.

  • Shady O’Grady’s Overnight Sensation has officially entered Early Access

Shady O’Grady’s Overnight Sensation has officially entered Early Access

If you’ve ever dreamed of lead singer energy without the actual vocal strain, this is the title to watch. From the developer behind the cult-favorite Rising Star 2, this new entry shifts gears into a high-energy roguelike deckbuilder that’s as much about strategy as it is about rock ‘n’ roll.

The Road to Stardom (One Card at a Time)

Unlike traditional band sims, Overnight Sensation uses a deck-building mechanic to simulate the chaos of a rising rock band. You aren’t just managing schedules; you’re playing every instrument, laying down vocals, and handling the technical grease that keeps a tour moving across the U.S.

    Key Gameplay Features:

    • The Gig Map: Navigate a roguelike map of the United States, choosing your path from dive bars to massive festivals.
    • Battle of the Bands: Face off against local rivals and area “bosses” to earn fame, better gear, and the occasional groupie.
    • Deck Management: Your “instruments” (guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and vocals) are your cards. Level them up to hit higher score multipliers, but watch out—dodgy leads and broken strings act as debuffs that can ruin a set.
    • Songwriting: After defeating rival bands, you can add new songs to your setlist. You even get to name them yourself, though your success depends on how well those “song cards” synergise with your existing deck.

    Why Early Access?

Developer Todd M. Gillissie is leaning heavily into community feedback for this release. Having spent two years refining Rising Star 2 based on player input, the goal for Overnight Sensation is to spend the next 9 to 12 months in Early Access.

One of the most ambitious goals on the roadmap? Replacing the current AI-generated placeholder music with 164 human-recorded tracks. The dev team plans to add more voice-overs, collectables, and random events (like van breakdowns or dodgy promoters) as the community helps fine-tune the balance.

“I realized that the community feedback helped drive many of the great ideas that ultimately ended up in the game… I’d like to take the same approach with Shady O’Grady’s™ Overnight Sensation.” — Gilligames

    Ready to Tour?

The game is available now on Steam. If you aren’t ready to commit to the full tour just yet, a demo is still available for download so you can test your rhythm before you hit the road.

Whether you’re in it for the tactical deck-building or just want to see if you can survive the “syphilis and riders” of the touring life, Overnight Sensation looks like a riff worth playing.

Are you planning to build your band from scratch, or do you have a specific genre in mind for your first run?

  • Wield The Beat Alpha Nomos Demo Out Now on Steam

Wield The Beat Alpha Nomos Demo Out Now on Steam

Wielding a sword is one thing, but wielding a melody? That’s a whole different tempo.

RibCage Games has officially dropped the demo for Alpha Nomos, a rhythm-action roguelite that looks like the neon-soaked lovechild of Hi-Fi Rush and BPM: Bullets Per Minute. If you’ve been looking for a reason to put your internal metronome to the test, this might just be your next obsession.

The Beat is Your Best Friend

In Alpha Nomos, you step into the boots of Cello, a protagonist trapped in a vibrant, melody-twisted world. But you aren’t just fighting rogue puppets; you’re performing. The game’s core mechanic revolves around “wielding the beat.” Every slash of your weapon—like the gloriously named SaXword—pulses to the soundtrack.

Timing your moves to the beat isn’t just for style points; it’s essential for survival. Landing strikes on the rhythm unleashes show-stopping combos and deals massive damage, turning every encounter into a perfectly choreographed dance of chaos.

    Roguelite Rhythms

What sets Alpha Nomos apart from your standard rhythm game is its roguelite depth. As you progress through the demo, you’ll encounter musical powerups that do more than just buff your stats—they actually change how your weapons sound.

Custom Soundscapes: Powerups are based on real-world musical terms.

Evolving Performance: As you stack upgrades, your “song” evolves, making every run sound and feel unique.

Reactive Environment: The world itself is “music-reactive,” with obstacles and enemies moving in sync with the current track.

    How to Play

The demo is currently available on Steam, giving players a taste of the tutorial and the opening levels. It’s a great chance to get a feel for the “SaXword” and the game’s unique hybrid of hack-and-slash combat and rhythmic precision.

Developer Pro-Tip: While you can play on a keyboard, RibCage Games strongly recommends using a controller to truly feel the groove.

The full game is slated for a 2026 release, but with the demo out now, there’s no reason to wait to start your performance.

  • Turn Your Beats into Platforms: Why SongRunner is the Most Expressive Platformer of 2026

Turn Your Beats into Platforms: Why SongRunner is the Most Expressive Platformer of 2026

If you’ve ever found yourself tapping your foot to a game’s soundtrack and wishing you could literally step on the beat, your wish just got granted.

SongRunner, the rhythm-based puzzle platformer that started as a standout darling of the 2025 GMTK Game Jam, has officially dropped its demo on Steam, and it’s doing something remarkably clever. In most platformers, the level design is a static obstacle course you have to memorise. In SongRunner, you are the architect of the rhythm.

    The Hook: Compose to Climb

The premise is simple but profound: the platforms are your own musical loops. As you navigate single-screen challenges, you use your keyboard (keys 1–8) to play notes. Each note you play snaps into a loop that syncs perfectly with the game’s high-energy original soundtrack. But these aren’t just sounds; they are physical objects.

    • Play a high note? You’ve just placed a high platform.
    • Drop a bass kick? That’s a sturdy ledge at your feet.

By the time you reach the exit flag, you haven’t just “beaten” a level—you’ve composed a unique melody that serves as the blueprint for your escape.

    Why It’s Striking a Chord

What makes SongRunner feel so fresh is the shift from “reaction” to “expression.” While there is definitely a puzzle element—finding the right sequence of notes to clear a gap or dodge a hazard—there is no single “correct” way to play.

“At the end of every level, you’ll have created your own platforming solution as well as your own unique melody… it’s precise, puzzly, and extremely expressive.” — Developer Matt Goode

    Key Features to Watch For:

    • Handcrafted Challenges: Dozens of single-screen puzzles that test both your platforming skills and your rhythmic timing.
    • Rhythmic Hazards: It’s not just about building; you’ll have to contend with environmental obstacles that move in time with the music.
    • Zero AI, Pure Soul: Solo developer Matt Goode has been vocal about the game’s “No AI” development process, leaning instead into hand-drawn art and an entirely original soundtrack.
    • Speedrunner Friendly: Level timers start the moment you move or play your first note, making it a perfect candidate for the competitive scene.

    How to Play

The game is currently in active development with a full release planned for later in 2026. However, you don’t have to wait to start your jam session.

Whether you’re a musician who loves games or a gamer who can’t keep a beat, SongRunner offers a rare kind of “flow state” where your ears and your thumbs are working in perfect harmony.

  • T-Pain is Dropping the Beat in My Singing Monsters: Welcome to the Clubbox!

T-Pain is Dropping the Beat in My Singing Monsters: Welcome to the Clubbox!

Get ready to turn up the volume, Monster-Handlers! In a move that absolutely nobody saw coming (but everyone is now obsessed with), Grammy Award-winning legend T-Pain is officially entering the Monster World.

This isn’t just a quick cameo or a new hat for your Mammott. Big Blue Bubble has announced a massive collaboration that introduces a permanent new feature: The Clubbox, a brand-new virtual music club and concert space.

    Meet Your New Manager: Autotuna

Leading the charge is a brand-new Lyrical Legendary Monster inspired by T-Pain himself, named Autotuna.

Starting February 25th, 2026, Autotuna will take up residence as the manager of the Clubbox. Far from just standing there and looking cool, this monster will act as your host and guide through the game’s newest social and musical hub.

Fun Fact: Autotuna is the second major artist-inspired Legendary to join the game recently, following the debut of bbli$zard (inspired by bbno$) on Cold Island.

    What is the Clubbox?

The Clubbox is set to be a “dynamic and alive” virtual venue within My Singing Monsters. Here’s what we know so far:

    • Opening Acts: The club launches with a series of “opening acts”—fresh monster bands and unique arrangements that set the stage for bigger things.
    • The Headliner: T-Pain’s monster, Autotuna, is scheduled to make its debut as the club’s first official headlining act later this spring.
    • A New Way to Play: Big Blue Bubble is hinting that the Clubbox will offer “new ways to collect songs” and interact with performances, making the musical experience more immersive than a standard island loop.

    Why T-Pain?

Aside from being the “King of Auto-Tune,” T-Pain is a massive gamer and a long-time supporter of creative tech. According to David Fardell, Marketing Director at Big Blue Bubble:

“T-Pain’s talent and track record speak for themselves, but his dedication to growing as an artist and developing new talent around him connects with Monsters perfectly.”

When Can You Join the Party?

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 25th. The update will be available across all platforms, including iOS, Android, Steam, and Amazon.

Whether you’re a long-time breeder or a new player lured in by the “Buy U a Drank” energy, the Clubbox is shaping up to be the biggest vibe shift in the game’s history.

We’ve all seen the trope: a ragtag group of misfits piles into a rusted-out van with nothing but a beat-up guitar amp and a dream of making it big. But usually, that’s a movie montage. Shady O’Grady’s™ Overnight Sensation turns that grind into a high-stakes, deck-building roguelike that is as punishing as a 2:00 AM load-out in the rain.

If you’ve ever wondered if you have what it takes to manage a band without the actual risk of losing your security deposit, this is your game.

The Gameplay: Cards, Chords, and Chaos

At its heart, Overnight Sensation follows the classic roguelike loop, but replaces “dungeon floors” with “tour legs.” You aren’t slashing goblins; you’re slaying crowds.

    • Build Your Setlist: Your deck represents your songs and stage moves. Do you open with a “High-Energy Riff” to build hype, or a “Power Ballad” to win over the sceptics?
    • Manage the Ego: Every band member has a “Stress” and “Ego” meter. Play too many solos with your lead guitarist, and your bassist might just quit mid-set.
    • The Permadeath Factor: If your “Reputation” hits zero, the band breaks up. You lose the van, the gear, and the fan club. It’s back to the garage to start a new “project” with different perks.

    Why It Hits Different

What Shady O’Grady’s™ gets right is the flavour. The cards aren’t just stats; they are relatable nightmares for anyone who’s ever been in a band.

    Card NameEffectThe “Real World” Vibe
“Bribe the Sound Guy”Improves audio quality for 3 turnsHanding a crumpled $20 bill to a guy named “Ratty.”
“Broken String”Skip next turn; gain +5 TensionThe literal panic of fumbling in the dark for a spare.
“Heckler Takedown”Silence a negative crowd effectThat one witty comeback that earns the room’s respect.

    The “Shady” Aesthetic

The art style leans heavily into the underground zine culture of the 90s—gritty, hand-drawn, and slightly caffeinated. It perfectly captures that feeling of a sticky venue floor. The soundtrack (naturally) is procedural, changing based on the cards you play, making your “deck” actually sound like a cohesive setlist.

Pro Tip: Don’t ignore the “Gas Money” mechanic. You can have a deck full of legendary hits, but if your van breaks down outside of Des Moines, the run is over.

    Final Verdict

Overnight Sensation is a love letter to the DIY music scene. It’s a game where “success” isn’t just winning—it’s surviving the tour with your dignity (and your drummer) intact. It’s addictive, brutal, and captures the rhythm of the road perfectly.
