There’s a golden rule in Gunnheim: if you go down while playing alone, you can get back on your feet — by landing a kill. Turns out one of the original developers took that rule personally.
A decade after the Viking co-op shooter first arrived, the last remaining member of the team has brought it back stronger than ever. Joni Häkkinen — original dev and now the entire staff at Finnish studio SIEIDI — has poured his energy into rebuilding the game from the ground up, and Gunnheim: Remastered is here.
What’s Changed? Everything Old Is New Again
This isn’t just a fresh coat of paint — it’s a full resurrection:
- 31 completely rebuilt levels, redesigned for flow, balance and fun
- 21 rebalanced weapons, so every axe, bow and hammer feels deadly and distinct
- Run-changing boons that reward different playstyles and keep every run feeling fresh
- Drop-in co-op for up to four players — online, local couch, or mix-and-match both at once
“Gunnheim was always meant to be played together, so naturally I remade it alone,” says Häkkinen, in a wry nod to the solo labour of love.
A Sacred Return
SIEIDI — whose name roughly translates to “a sacred place” in Sámi — was founded in 2014, and Häkkinen is the last of the original crew still standing. He’s kept the spirit alive, honouring everything the team built while refining and polishing it into the definitive edition they always wanted to make.
Whether you’re a long-time Zerker or stepping into the frozen realms for the first time, Gunnheim: Remastered delivers fast-paced, furious Viking action that’s just as satisfying solo as it is with friends. And if you fall? You know what to do — get back up and make it count.
Gunnheim: Remastered is out now on Steam.
