    If you thought you knew what the post-campaign grind looked like, think again. GGG has completely torn out and rebuilt the endgame from the ground up, making it smoother for fresh faces while introducing terrifying new depths for the veterans.

    1. The Runes of Aldur Challenge League: High Risk, Massive Rewards

    The headline feature of Patch 0.5 is the Runes of Aldur League. As you journey through Wraeclast, you will discover ancient Ezomyte Remnants scattered across the zones. These aren’t just pretty monoliths—they are your ticket to immense power.

    • Inscribe Your Fate: You can choose specific crafting symbols to carve into the remnants, essentially tailoring your own reward outcomes.
    • The Catch: Choosing your loot resurrects nearby waves of monsters, heavily buffed by the very modifiers you just picked. You have to kill them again to claim your prize.
    • Verisium Runeforging: Surviving these encounters nets you Verisium, a valuable resource used to craft over 100 new Runes and unlock the highly coveted universal Runic Skills.

    Pro Tip: Keep an eye out from Act 4 onwards. The Runes of Aldur mechanics begin to blend seamlessly into Expedition encounters, dialing the complexity—and the loot drops—up to eleven.

    2. A Completely Rebuilt Endgame Atlas

    Let’s be honest: post-campaign grinds can sometimes feel like running into a brick wall of spreadsheets. Grinding Gear Games recognised this and introduced the Origins of Divinity storyline to anchor the endgame.

    Instead of an obtuse, unguided map, players now start at a set location on the Atlas, moving through clear, dedicated questlines. Clearing maps inside the newly raised Precursor Fortresses earns points toward a brand-new Atlas Passive Tree featuring over 300 fully-allocatable nodes. With 30 new endgame map areas and 15 deadly bosses (including four massive Pinnacle encounters), the endgame feels like a brand-new game in itself.

    Masters of the Atlas

    To add even more strategic depth, Patch 0.5 introduces three new Ascendancy-style Masters: Doryani, Hilda, and Jado. Each master features a customizable 12-node tree. You can allocate points across all three simultaneously and swap your Atlas loadouts right before a map run. The build diversity here is mind-boggling.

    3. Two New Ascendancy Classes to Master

    Ready to roll a new character for the league start? You’ve got two incredible new options to choose from:

    The Spirit Walker (Huntress)

    If you love having an entourage, this is for you. The Spirit Walker focuses heavily on animal companions. For the truly ambitious, this class even allows you to tame boss monsters to fight by your side.

    The Martial Artist (Monk)

    Want to leave the weapons behind? The Martial Artist leans completely into unarmed combat. Utilising heavy-hitting combos, the new Fists of Stone skill, and mirage clones, it turns PoE 2 into an incredibly fluid brawler.

    4. The New Meta: Runic Ward

    Defensive layers are getting a massive shakeup with Runic Ward. This brand-new defensive stat, craftable via Verisium, acts as an independent safety net that activates right when you hit 1 Life. It absorbs incoming damage without touching your actual health pool, totally transforming how tanky endgame builds are going to be constructed. Keep in mind, though—you’ll need to manage it carefully, as the new Runic Skills require spending Runic Ward to cast instead of Mana or Life!

    Return of the Ancients represents the final major phase of Path of Exile 2’s journey in Early Access before the grand 1.0 launch later this year.
