The “road trip” genre of gaming is about to get a whole lot more emotional. Annapurna Interactive and German developer Third Shift have officially confirmed that their highly anticipated narrative adventure, Forever Ago, will be launching on the Epic Games Store later this year.
After being in development for several years, this “heartfelt and nuanced” story of redemption was recently re-showcased during the March 2026 Xbox Partner Preview, confirming a Fall 2026 release window for PC and consoles.
A Journey of Redemption and Polaroids
In Forever Ago, players step into the shoes of Alfred, a man who, following a significant personal tragedy, decides to pack up his ageing minivan and head north. Unlike your typical high-octane adventure, this is a slow-burn, contemplative journey focused on memory, loss, and the beauty of the unexpected.
Alfred isn’t just driving; he’s documenting. Equipped with an instant camera, you’ll capture snapshots of your journey that serve as more than just collectables. Photography is a core gameplay mechanic used to:
- Solve Environmental Puzzles: Use your lens to interact with the world and uncover paths forward.
- Unlock Memories: Snap photos of specific objects or locations to trigger vignettes of Alfred’s past with his sweetheart, Audrey.
- Document the Road: Create a visual diary of the diverse landscapes, from sun-drenched deserts to misty forest trails.

“We explore themes of grief, how to deal with grief, and redemption… We try to not have your typical 30-year-old white male character at the center of the game,” says Third Shift co-founder Fabian Denter.

While a specific day hasn’t been nailed down, the game is set for a Fall 2026 release. PC players can choose their favourite storefront, as it will be available on both Steam and the Epic Games Store.
