The wait is finally over! Battlefield 6 Season 1: Rogue Ops is here, and it’s kicking things off with a bang. Welcome to the Californian Badlands
Blackwell Fields takes us to an expansive, sun-scorched oil field in the Californian chaparral, set against the backdrop of a recommissioned American air base. Visually, the map is a stunner, offering a distinct aesthetic that’s a welcome change from some of the launch locales. Expect dry, rolling hills, low brush, and an atmosphere thick with the stench of conflict—and burning oil.
It’s this setting that fuels the map’s excellent design, facilitating classic combined-arms combat that is the hallmark of the series.
A True Combined Arms Sandbox
What immediately stands out about Blackwell Fields is its scale and how well it caters to All-Out Warfare.
- Vehicle Dominance is Back: This map is tailor-made for armoured assaults and air superiority. The large, open spaces with dramatic slopes and natural cover are a dream for tank drivers, allowing for thrilling cat-and-mouse games over the hills. Crucially, Blackwell Fields is one of the few maps to feature jets, providing a much-needed breath of fresh air for pilots and an exciting new dimension to the air-to-air battles.
- Infantry Pockets of Resistance: While the open fields invite vehicular mayhem, the map isn’t a death trap for foot soldiers. Oil wells, construction equipment, shipping containers, and scattered airbase structures provide ample cover and tight corridors for intense infantry skirmishes. Learning to use the terrain and man-made structures to cross open ground is key to survival.
- The Sniper’s Perch: The rolling hills and high points provide perfect vantage points for the Recon class, especially with the arrival of the new Mini Scout sniper rifle. Positioning is everything, as an exposed sniper can quickly become the target of an APC or attack helicopter.
The Flow of Battle
Blackwell Fields manages to feel both vast and focused. The Conquest flags are spaced out enough to allow vehicles to breathe and flanking manoeuvres to thrive, yet the key points tend to funnel players into engaging and chaotic chokepoints.
Unlike some launch maps that felt overly reliant on verticality, Blackwell Fields keeps the battle firmly on the ground, making for a much more traditional, yet still intense, large-scale fight. The threat of fire spreading across the oil-rich landscape is a dynamic environmental hazard you’ll need to watch out for!
Part of a Bigger Picture
Blackwell Fields is just the first taste of Season 1’s content drop, arriving with the “Rogue Ops” phase. It launches alongside the new Traverser Mark 2 APC and a handful of new weapons, all of which feel immediately relevant on this sprawling map.
Whether you prefer storming an objective in a tank, raining fire from a jet, or holding a position with your squad, Blackwell Fields is a must-play. It successfully recaptures the classic Battlefield feeling and has instantly become one of the game’s best maps.
