  • SEGA and Xbox Lift the Veil on RGG Studio’s Epic New Saga: STRANGER THAN HEAVEN

SEGA and Xbox Lift the Veil on RGG Studio’s Epic New Saga: STRANGER THAN HEAVEN

The rumours are true, and the scope is even bigger than we imagined. Yesterday, SEGA of America and Xbox teamed up for a dedicated broadcast, Xbox Presents: A Special Look at STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, giving fans an exhaustive 30-minute deep dive into the next ambitious project from Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG) Studio.

If you thought the Like a Dragon series was sprawling, prepare yourself. STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is a multi-generational epic that spans 50 years of Japanese history, following one man’s journey from a desperate stowaway to a titan of the underworld and show business.

    A Tale of Five Eras

Unlike the localised street brawls we’ve come to expect, this new IP takes players on a grand tour of Japan across five distinct time periods and cities. You play as Makoto Daito (voiced by Yu Shirota), a half-Japanese, half-American boy fleeing persecution in 1915 San Francisco.

His journey evolves through a changing nation:

    • 1915 – Kokura, Fukuoka: A gritty industrial town where Makoto first arrives.
    • 1929 – Kure, Hiroshima: A naval port dominated by early Yakuza influence.
    • 1943 – Minami, Osaka: An entertainment hub struggling under the shadow of war.
    • 1951 – Atami, Shizuoka: A seaside resort defined by post-war optimism.
    • 1965 – Shinjuku, Tokyo: The chaotic birth of the modern pleasure district.

In a massive lore reveal, it was confirmed that Makoto Daito’s path eventually leads him to become Makoto Tojo—the legendary founder of the Tojo Clan that has anchored the Yakuza series for decades.

Snoop Dogg and a Star-Studded International Cast

In a move that set social media ablaze, RGG Studio confirmed that West Coast rap legend Snoop Dogg plays a pivotal role as Orpheus, a charismatic international smuggler who becomes Makoto’s mentor.

    The cast also features:

    • Tori Kelly: Playing Suzy, an ambitious singer in the 1950s segment.
    • Satoshi Fujihara: The J-Pop star also makes a featured appearance.
    • Bunta Sugawara: In a stunning technical feat, the late, legendary actor (famous for Battles Without Honor and Humanity) has been recreated via CG with his family’s permission to play a key figure in the narrative.

    Combat Reimagined: “Extreme Intuitive Violence”

RGG Studio is known for its “brawler” DNA, but STRANGER THAN HEAVEN introduces a more grounded, tactile combat system.

    • Independent Limb Control: Players can move Makoto’s left and right sides independently, allowing for precise blocks with one hand and counterattacks with the other.
    • Environmental Brutality: The showcase highlighted “scrappy” combat, including tackling enemies downstairs and using a massive roster of period-accurate weapons, from katanas to “new inventions of the era.”

    The Life of a Showman

The game isn’t just about fighting. A major secondary gameplay loop involves Makoto’s rise in the entertainment world. Players will:

    1. Collect Sounds: Record ambient noises (trains, street bustles, even combat grunts) from the environment.
    2. Compose: Combine these sounds into original musical tracks.
    3. Produce: Manage bands, scout performers, and design stage productions to build a rags-to-riches empire.

    Launch Details

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is set to launch Winter 2026.

In a win for subscribers, it was confirmed as a Day One release for Xbox Game Pass. The game will also be available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5.

“This collision of East and West results in a unique era that exudes both optimism and melancholy.” — Tori Kelly, Cast Member

Stay tuned to TechMash for more updates as we get closer to the winter release!

  • Sega & Microsoft’s “Stranger Than Heaven”: The 50-Year Epic You Didn’t See Coming

Sega & Microsoft’s “Stranger Than Heaven”: The 50-Year Epic You Didn’t See Coming

If you thought Ryu Ga Gotoku (RGG) Studio was content just giving us more neon-soaked street fights in modern-day Kamurocho, think again. During the latest Xbox Partner Preview, Sega and Microsoft finally pulled back the curtain on the project formerly known as Project Century.

Now officially titled Stranger Than Heaven, this isn’t just another spin-off—it’s a massive, multi-generational epic that feels like the most ambitious swing Sega has taken in a decade.

Five Eras, Five Cities, One Massive Mystery

The headline news from the reveal is the game’s staggering scope. Unlike the dense, single-neighbourhood focus of the Like a Dragon series, Stranger Than Heaven spans a 50-year history of the Japanese underworld. We’re talking about five distinct time periods:

1915: The dawn of the Taisho era.

    1929: Pre-war tension and jazz-age aesthetic.

1943: The height of WWII (a bold and rare setting for RGG).

1951: Post-war reconstruction and the rise of the black markets.

1965: The classic “Showy” era of the Japanese economic miracle.

Each era will reportedly feature its own unique Japanese city. While RGG is famous for reusing assets to keep their release schedule fast, the trailer showed off entirely new bespoke assets, from period-accurate trams to era-specific fighting animations.

    A “Stranger” Kind of Combat

The gameplay footage showcased a brutal, highly dynamic combat system. It looks like an evolution of the RGG brawler DNA, but with a much heavier emphasis on:

Weaponry: Era-appropriate tools of the trade.

Environmental Interaction: Think less of “picking up a bicycle” and more of using the literal architecture of the time to your advantage.

One-vs-Many: The scale of the brawls looked significantly larger than what we’ve seen in recent titles.

The Microsoft Connection: Day One on Game Pass

The “special relationship” between Sega and Microsoft continues to bear fruit. Microsoft confirmed that Stranger Than Heaven will be a Day One Xbox Game Pass title. It also supports Xbox Play Anywhere, meaning a single purchase gets you the game on both Series X|S and PC with cross-save functionality.

Note: While Microsoft is heavily marketing the game, it is not exclusive. It will also be launching on PlayStation 5 and Steam.

    What’s Next?

If you’re hungry for more, you won’t have to wait long. Sega and Microsoft announced a first-of-its-kind standalone broadcast: “Xbox Presents: A Special Look at Stranger Than Heaven.”

    Date: May 6, 2026 (May 7 for UK/BST)

Time: 4:00 PM PDT / 12:00 AM BST

What to expect: A deep dive into the story of Mako Daito, the “all-star cast” reveal, and extended gameplay.

Stranger Than Heaven looks like it’s trying to be the Red Dead Redemption of the Yakuza world—a sombre, sprawling historical epic that defines an era. We’ll be watching the May showcase closely.

  • Blue Meets Blue: Sonic Rumble Party Launches Massive Smurfs Crossover and New Game Mode

Blue Meets Blue: Sonic Rumble Party Launches Massive Smurfs Crossover and New Game Mode

Get ready to trade your gold rings for some Smurfberries! SEGA has just dropped a massive update for their high-speed multiplayer title, officially rebranding it as Sonic Rumble Party to celebrate a brand-new era of chaotic fun.

The headline act? A legendary (and surprisingly blue) collaboration with The Smurfs that kicks off today, March 16, 2026.

The Smurfs Move Into the Toy World

In an unexpected yet charming crossover, the residents of Smurf Village are joining the roster. From now until April 15, 2026, players can dive into a limited-time event featuring everyone’s favourite small blue heroes.

    What’s New in the Crossover:

Playable Characters: Unlock and race as iconic characters, including Papa Smurf, Smurfette, Wild Smurf, and Blossom.

Exclusive Stages: Take a detour through the new “Smurf Run” stage, where the lush greenery of the Smurf Village meets the frantic pace of the Sonic universe.

Event Rewards: A dedicated Event Pass and the Red Star Ring Shop will offer exclusive Smurf-themed skins, emotes, and cosmetics.

    Introducing: Party Rumble Mode

If you’ve been looking for something a bit more casual than the 32-player Battle Royale madness, the update has you covered. The brand-new Party Rumble mode is officially live.

Designed for quick bursts of fun, Party Rumble features:

8-Player Sessions: Smaller, more intimate groups for faster matchmaking.

30+ New Minigames: SEGA has added over 30 intuitive, single-round minigames exclusive to this mode.

Casual Pacing: Perfect for players who want to jump in for a quick win without the intensity of the standard Ring Survival modes.

    Toy Capsules & System Overhauls

The update isn’t just about skins and stages; the core progression has received a significant facelift.

Toy Capsules: A new reward system where playing rounds earns you fragments for high-tier skins and Puzzle Pieces. Completing these puzzles unlocks premium rewards like Red Star Rings.

More Freebies: The Daily Claw Machine free attempts have been quadrupled, moving from one per day to four.

Economy Changes: Red Star Rings are now more accessible via the standard Season Pass, making the game friendlier for F2P players.

TechMash Verdict: With the relaunch as Sonic Rumble Party, SEGA is clearly leaning into the “party” aspect of the game. The Smurfs collaboration is a fun, nostalgic twist that fits the “Toy World” aesthetic perfectly. Whether you’re a hardcore speedster or a casual minigame fan, there’s never been a better time to rumble.

Sonic Rumble Party is available now on iOS, Android, and Steam.

  • Giyu Tomioka: The Water Hashira Returns in The Hinokami Chronicles 2

Giyu Tomioka: The Water Hashira Returns in The Hinokami Chronicles 2

The announcement of Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Hinokami Chronicles 2 has sent shockwaves through the anime gaming community. While the first title successfully captured the cinematic flair of CyberConnect2’s signature style, the sequel promises to dive deeper into the Hashira Training and Infinity Castle arcs.

At the heart of this hype is the man of few words and lethal precision: Giyu Tomioka.

    A Refined Combat Flow

In the original Hinokami Chronicles, Giyu was a top-tier pick for players who preferred a “counter-punch” playstyle. In the sequel, we expect his kit to evolve from simple defensive manoeuvres to a more complex representation of Water Breathing.

Dead Calm (Eleventh Form): This was Giyu’s bread and butter. In the sequel, rumours suggest a more precise timing window that rewards “Perfect Parries” with a devastating cinematic follow-up.

Fluidity and Reach: Expect his movement speed to see a slight buff, reflecting his mastery during the later stages of the manga/anime.

Surge Mechanics: With the new game likely expanding on the “Awakening” system, Giyu’s Demon Slayer Mark will likely play a massive role in his mid-match power spikes.

Why Giyu Matters for the Sequel

Giyu isn’t just another roster filler; he is the emotional anchor of Tanjiro’s journey. From a technical standpoint, Giyu serves as the “standard-setter” for the Water Breathing style in-game.

    The “Lone Wolf” Aesthetics

CyberConnect2 has always excelled at visual fidelity. For The Hinokami Chronicles 2, the “Water Surface” effects are expected to receive a physics overhaul. When Giyu triggers his Constant Flux, the interaction between the water graphics and the environment should feel more immersive, utilising the power of current-gen hardware to ensure no frame drops during high-intensity Ultimates.

“Don’t weep. Don’t yield to despair. Now isn’t the time for that.” — Giyu Tomioka

    Final Thoughts

Giyu Tomioka remains the gold standard for Hashira excellence. Whether you’re a competitive player looking for the perfect defensive build or a fan wanting to relive the stoic warrior’s best moments, his presence in the sequel is a primary selling point.

Stay tuned to TechMash.co.uk as we track more character reveals and release date leaks for The Hinokami Chronicles 2.

  • The Hinokami Returns: Tanjiro Kamado (Infinity Castle) Arrives in Hinokami Chronicles 2

The Hinokami Returns: Tanjiro Kamado (Infinity Castle) Arrives in Hinokami Chronicles 2

The wait is finally over, Demon Slayer fans. If you thought Tanjiro had peaked during the Swordsmith Village arc, CyberConnect2 just threw a massive, fiery curveball into the meta. As of February 13, 2026, the protagonist we’ve followed from the snowy mountains to the Hashira training grounds has reached his most formidable form yet: Tanjiro Kamado (Infinity Castle).

This isn’t just a simple costume swap; it’s a complete evolution of the character that defines the high-stakes intensity of the Infinity Castle film trilogy.

A New Breed of Sun Breathing

While the base game’s Tanjiro focused on the transition between Water Breathing and Hinokami Kagura, the Infinity Castle DLC is all about unrefined power and absolute precision.

    • Refined Hinokami Kagura: His moveset feels significantly faster, with less “wind-up” on his heavy attacks. You can feel the weight of his training with the Hashira in every swing.
    • The “Dragon Sun Halo Head Dance”: This isn’t just a flashy ultimate; the DLC version features updated tracking and a devastating finish that mirrors the cinematic brilliance of the latest movie.
    • Aesthetic Upgrades: Clad in his battle-worn uniform and featuring the distinct “demon slayer mark” that glows during his Ultimate Art, he looks every bit the part of a demon’s worst nightmare.

The Power of Forged Bonds: Dual Ultimates

One of the coolest features of The Hinokami Chronicles 2 is the Dual Ultimate system, and Tanjiro (Infinity Castle) is the crown jewel of this mechanic.

When paired with the upcoming Giyu Tomioka (Infinity Castle) DLC, players can trigger a unique team finisher. It’s a breathtaking sequence that showcases the Master/Student bond, combining Water and Sun into a literal whirlpool of fire.

Pro Tip: Try pairing this Tanjiro with the newly released Akaza (Infinity Castle) in VS Mode for a “what-if” scenario. The dialogue interactions are a goldmine for fans of the manga!

What’s Included in the Character Pack?

If you haven’t picked up the Infinity Castle – Part 1 Character Pass yet, here is what comes with the Tanjiro-specific drop:

    ItemDescription
    Playable CharacterTanjiro Kamado (Infinity Castle)
QuotesNew dialogue lines reflecting his resolve in the final battle.
Profile PhotosHigh-quality stills from the Infinity Castle arc.
Gear ItemsCustomization options to tweak his stats in VS Mode.

    What’s Next for the Roster?

Tanjiro is the fourth major release in this pass, following Kaigaku, Zenitsu, and Akaza. But the road to the final showdown continues. We still have several heavy hitters on the horizon:

    1. Giyu Tomioka (Infinity Castle) – Expected early 2026.
    2. Shinobu Kocho (Infinity Castle) – Coming soon.
    3. Doma – The chilling Upper Rank 2 is slated for later in the year.

The Infinity Castle arc is where Demon Slayer reaches its emotional and technical peak, and seeing that translated into the Hinokami Chronicles 2 engine is nothing short of spectacular. Whether you’re a competitive player or just here for the “flashy” visuals, this Tanjiro is a must-play.

  • The Dragon Evolves: Insights into Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties

The Dragon Evolves: Insights into Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties

The latest Creator’s Voice segment just dropped, and it’s clear that RGE (Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio) isn’t just polishing the past—they’re rewriting the rules of the “Extreme Remake.” With Yakuza Kiwami 3 and the expansion Dark Ties, the team is tackling the series’ most emotional chapter with heavy-hitting tech and narrative depth.

Here are the key takeaways from the developers:

    1. Okinawa, Reimagined

The leap from the 2009 original to the Dragon Engine is staggering. The creators emphasised that Morning Glory Orphanage isn’t just a backdrop anymore; it’s a living, breathing sanctuary.

    • Dynamic Weather: The tropical sun affects character stamina and NPC behaviour.
    • Seamless Transitions: Combat now triggers instantly on the streets of Kokusai Dori without loading screens.

    2. The “Dark Ties” Expansion

This is more than a DLC; it’s a parallel narrative. Dark Ties explores the unseen perspective of the Mine family and the political underworld of the late 2000s. The creators hinted at a “moral grey area” that adds weight to the original’s climax.

    3. Combat: The “Kiwami” Standard

The “clunky” feel of the PS3 era is gone. The developers have introduced:

    • Heat Style Switching: Fluidly move between Kiryu’s classic brawler stance and new defensive “Guardian” techniques.
    • Environmental Brutality: More interactive objects in the environment than any previous Kiwami title.

“We didn’t just want to upscale the textures. We wanted to capture the specific heat and humidity of Okinawa, and the cold, sharp tension of Tokyo’s boardrooms.” — RGG Creative Lead

  • Reloading the Nightmare: Our Take on The House of the Dead 2: Remake on Switch

Reloading the Nightmare: Our Take on The House of the Dead 2: Remake on Switch

The Nintendo Switch has become a surprisingly fertile ground for reviving classic arcade experiences, and few titles scream “arcade classic” louder than SEGA‘s rail shooter franchise. The latest to get the modern makeover is The House of the Dead 2: Remake, developed by MegaPixel Studio and published by Forever Entertainment.

It’s time to reload, hit the streets of Venice, and ask the timeless question: Does this remake deliver the same frenetic, B-movie zombie-blasting fun we remember from the late ’90s arcade cabinets?

A Venetian Vacation Gone Wrong: The Plot

The House of the Dead 2 drops players back into a mysterious, undead-infested world, just two years after the original Curien Mansion incident. This time, AMS agents James Taylor and Gary Stewart are dispatched to a beautiful, yet suddenly chaotic, European city (Venice, Italy) to investigate a fresh outbreak of monstrous creatures.

The plot is classic rail-shooter cheese: relentless action, ridiculous dialogue, and a parade of memorable, over-the-top bosses. The remake sticks faithfully to this formula, preserving the unique horror charm that made the original a cult favourite.

    What’s New: Graphics and Features

The most immediate change is the visual overhaul. The remake features modern 3D graphics, trading the blocky, low-res textures of the 1998 original for a detailed, high-definition look. However, the art direction attempts to walk a fine line—it’s updated, but still retains a lot of the visual identity and colour palette of the original, avoiding a complete aesthetic departure.

Key features of the remake include:

    • Updated Visuals: Modern graphics and lighting bring the nightmare to life with a fresh coat of paint.
    • Remastered Audio: A fully remastered soundtrack is included, though purists will be happy to know you can often switch back to the classic, cheesy OST.
    • Co-op Mode: The game supports the essential local two-player co-op, letting you and a friend blast through the hordes together with two sets of Joy-Cons.
    • Multiple Modes: It features the full original campaign with its branching paths and multiple endings, plus extra challenges like a Boss Rush Mode and a Training Mode to hone your headshot skills.

The Elephant in the Room: Switch Controls

For any rail shooter on the Nintendo Switch, the conversation immediately turns to controls. The Switch, lacking a dedicated sensor bar like the Wii, relies on the Joy-Con’s gyroscope/IR sensor for aiming.

This is where the game’s reception has been mixed. While the developers have optimised the Joy-Con aiming, the control precision can feel erratic and floaty compared to a true light gun or even the Wii’s pointer. The experience is serviceable and still frantic, but capturing that perfect arcade feel is a struggle inherent to the hardware. Players will need patience and perhaps some control settings tweaking to find a comfortable setup.

    The Final Word: Nostalgia Factor

The House of the Dead 2: Remake is a successful trip down memory lane, even if the travel accommodations (the controls) are a little bumpy. It perfectly captures the non-stop, challenging, and wonderfully campy arcade action of the original.

If you are a hardcore fan of the original, or simply love a high-octane zombie shooter, this is a fun, faithful, and frenetic way to experience a classic. Just be prepared to fight both the undead and, occasionally, the aiming cursor. It remains a blast, especially when playing with a friend!

The House of the Dead 2: Remake is available now on the Nintendo Switch eShop and physically through various retailers.

  • Master the Seas, Embrace the Excess, and Betray All: Total War: Warhammer III’s Tides of Torment DLC Arrives!

Master the Seas, Embrace the Excess, and Betray All: Total War: Warhammer III’s Tides of Torment DLC Arrives!

The battle for the fate of the Warhammer world continues to rage, and Creative Assembly has unleashed a fresh wave of chaos, elegance, and brute strength with the latest DLC for Total War: Warhammer III: Tides of Torment.

This content pack delivers three utterly unique Legendary Lords, each bringing their own twisted mechanics and powerful new units to the sprawling Immortal Empires campaign map. Get ready to sail with the High Elves, feast on decadence with Slaanesh, and master the art of betrayal with Norsca.

The Sea Lord’s Command: Aislinn and the High Elves

The coasts of Ulthuan have a new, ruthless guardian: Sea Lord Aislinn. This peerless naval tactician takes the High Elves in a radical new direction, focusing on sea-based power and coastal assaults.

    • Unique Mechanic: Dragonship Fleets: Forget traditional settlement management! Aislinn commands self-sufficient Dragonships, which act as massive, mobile cities. These ships serve as your primary bases, supporting nearby fleets and allowing for recruitment and building, letting you take the fight to any distant shore.
    • Asur Occupation: Instead of occupying most settlements, Aislinn dedicates them to his High Elf allies, earning powerful boons and keeping the focus on his naval strength while establishing strategic Sea Patrol Outposts and Elven Colonies.
    • New Units: Aislinn’s roster is dripping with nautical might, including the fearsome Merwyrm monster, the monstrous Oceanids and Sea Elementals, and the versatile, eagle-powered Lothern Skycutters. A true master of the oceans, he is also joined by the Legendary Hero Caradryan.

Aislinn offers a refreshingly aggressive and mobile campaign for the Asur, rewarding daring strikes and true mastery of the campaign map’s waterways.

The Serpentine Scourge: Dechala the Denied One (Slaanesh)

For the followers of the Prince of Pleasure, Dechala the Denied One embodies the perfect fusion of beauty and brutality. This serpentine warlord focuses on conquest and the accumulation of Decadence to fuel her ever-growing obsession.

    • Unique Mechanic: Pillars of Cruelty: Dechala doesn’t just conquer; she converts. Conquered settlements can be turned into Thrall Camps (for economic gain), Tormentor’s Holds (for military and defence), or extravagant Pleasure Palaces (for advanced buildings and boons).
    • Decadence & Power: By waging her campaign of excess, Dechala gains the unique currency of Decadence, which is essential for expanding her Pleasure Palaces and unlocking dark, powerful abilities on the campaign and battlefield.
    • New Units: Dechala’s armies are a terrifying spectacle of excess, introducing new units like the monstrous flying Preyton, the frenzied Slaangors, and powerful new Slaaneshi Infantry variants like Pleasureseekers and Devotees of Slaanesh.

Dechala’s campaign is a whirlwind of swift conquest and macabre resource management, perfect for players who enjoy a fast-paced, high-risk, high-reward playstyle.

The Master Schemer: Sayl the Faithless (Norsca)

Rounding out the trio is the treacherous Sorcerer, Sayl the Faithless, bringing a whole new level of cunning and manipulation to the brutal Norsca faction.

    • Unique Mechanic: Manipulations: Sayl is a master schemer, using his insidious Manipulations to sow chaos among his enemies. These powerful actions can disrupt army logistics, damage settlements, and even sever diplomatic ties between your foes! But be wary—too much trickery can attract Dark Attention with painful consequences.
    • Dark Ritual: Ever-thirsty for sorcerous power, Sayl builds Chaos Altars to charge his Dark Ritual. This questline involves bespoke battles, dilemmas, and events, all leading to the ultimate arcane prize.
    • New Units: Sayl brings some truly monstrous additions to Norsca’s roster, including the two-headed giant Curs’d Ettin, the terrifying Dread Maw, and armoured infantry variants like the Marauder Bearmen. He is also accompanied by the Legendary Hero Beorg Bearstruck.

Sayl offers a more cerebral Norscan campaign, blending classic raiding with a sophisticated, Machiavellian political game.

More than Just DLC: Free Update 7.0 Content

The Tides of Torment release is accompanied by a massive free update for all players, Update 7.0, which introduces significant reworks and free Legendary Lords:

    • Free Legendary Lord: The Masque of Slaanesh: All players will be able to take command of The Masque, whose unique campaign mechanic, The Eternal Dance, rewards aggressive and constant movement across the map with escalating bonuses.
    • High Elf & Norsca Overhauls: The update includes sweeping changes for both races. High Elves gain the new Patrons of the Realm feature to vie for influence, while Norsca receives a much-anticipated overhaul, including a new Pillaging faction feature.

Tides of Torment promises to deliver some of the most unique and distinctive campaigns in the entire trilogy. Whether you seek glorious battle, decadent indulgence, or the thrill of betrayal, there’s a new Legendary Lord waiting to lead your legions to victory!
