Thirteen Years, Infinite Worlds — Space Engineers Still Builds, Still Inspires

On 23 October 2013, an ambitious sandbox called Space Engineers launched into Steam Early Access. No one at Keen Software House — and no one playing it — could have guessed that thirteen years later, we’d still be here: still assembling, still testing, still discovering exactly what happens when you hand players the tools to build the impossible.

From “Sandbox” to a Living Universe

Before it had a name, the project was simply codenamed “Sandbox”. The premise was deceptively straightforward: place functional, physics?driven engineering blocks into players’ hands and let them figure out what to do. The tools came first — everything else followed.

    • October 2013 — Early Access debut: creative building, basic physics, and the freedom to dream
    • 2015 — Planetary arrival: the game expanded beyond asteroids to include atmospheric flight, gravity wells, and surface bases
    • 2019 — Official full release — yet development kept evolving
    • 2020–2023 — Xbox and PlayStation editions brought the cosmos to living rooms
    • 2025 — Space Engineers 2 launched into Early Access, carrying the torch forward with fresh technology and the same boundless philosophy

    The Greatest Discovery Is You

Thirteen years hasn’t just added blocks, planets, or platforms — it has revealed something far more extraordinary: you.

Keen Software House reflected on the milestone: “Thirteen years later, we are still building, still experimenting, and still discovering what happens when we put engineering tools into your hands.”

The community turned those tools into wonders no single developer could have designed:

    • Ships with functioning propulsion systems, docking clamps, and automated defence grids
    • Colonies spanning multiple worlds, linked by player?built transport networks
    • Mods that rewire gameplay entirely
    • Blueprints shared by the thousands, teaching new engineers how to take flight

The real discovery wasn’t a feature — it was how brilliantly, creatively, and collaboratively you would use them.

    A Gift Across Generations

To mark thirteen years, Keen is giving every owner of the original Space Engineers the “Ancient Engineer” character skin for Space Engineers 2 — a wearable tribute to the journey, linking the classic suit to the new frontier.

Space Engineers 2 remains in active Early Access, growing slice by slice — creative mode, survival, multiplayer, and more arriving in stages. The philosophy hasn’t changed: build together, experiment openly, and keep looking upward.

    The Blueprint Remains Open

Whether you launched in 2013, docked in 2020, or are just revving your first thrusters today — you are part of something rare. Few games stay vibrant for thirteen months, let alone thirteen years. The reason is simple: you build it.

    The next blueprint is yours.

Defend Your Designs — Space Engineers 2 Unleashes Hostile Encounters, Its First Combat NPC Update

Your builds are no longer just creations — they’re targets. Keen Software House has officially launched Hostile Encounters, the game-changing Alpha update for Space Engineers 2 that introduces combat NPCs to the sandbox for the very first time. From today, the Almagest System isn’t empty anymore — and the enemies you’ll face are just as capable of navigating, fighting, and destroying as you are.

Meet the Threat — Renegades & Boatmen

Two hostile factions have emerged across the system, and they don’t just stand around waiting to be shot:

    • Renegades — Scavengers and pirates patrolling stations, outposts, and wreckage. They patrol routes, take cover when fired upon, react to damage, and call for backup. They’ll hunt you inside your ships and stations as easily as they do in open space
    • Boatmen — Heavier, tougher leaders of Renegade squads. Slower, more heavily armoured, and deadlier — these are the lieutenants you’ll want to spot before they spot you

Crucially: they move through the same fully destructible world you do. Walls, corridors, hull sections — nothing is safe. If you build it, they can enter it, damage it, and bring it down. Your defences matter more than ever.

More Than Enemies — The Full Hostile Encounters Changelog

NPCs are the headline feature, but the update reshapes the entire experience:

    CategoryWhat’s New
Combat NPCsRenegades & Boatmen with patrol, cover, and communication behaviours
Almagest SystemExpanded locations, new contracts, overhauled ore distribution, improved lighting
EnvironmentVerdure flora system bringing richer vegetation to planetary surfaces
Building BlocksCables, Pipes, Armour Slabs, Interior Turrets, and decorative props
Combat FXNew impact, explosion, and damage visual effects
    PerformanceOptimisations across the VRAGE3 engine

“We originally announced Combat NPCs and Co-op Multiplayer as part of the same update. During development, the NPC systems reached a point where they were ready to go into players’ hands sooner. Rather than hold them back, we decided to release Combat NPCs early.”

    — Keen Software House

Four-player co-op multiplayer remains in active development and is targeted for an early 2027 release.

Design Changes — Building for Defence

This update fundamentally changes how you build. No longer just about aesthetics or function — every corridor, door, and turret placement now matters:

    • Internal Layouts — Chokepoints, defensible perimeters, and fallback routes are survival necessities
    • Interior Turrets — Newly added automated defence systems to patrol your decks when you’re away
    • Resource Risks — Renegades will contest mining sites and salvage runs; high-value ore locations now carry real danger
    • Contracts — New missions explicitly task players with clearing Renegade-held facilities and retrieving stolen cargo

    Status & Availability

    • Platform: Steam Playable Alpha
    • Update Released: 19 October 2026
    • Price: Pioneer Edition available now
    • Multiplayer: 4-player co-op in development — early 2027 target
    • Feedback: Keen is actively refining NPC behaviour, balance, and animations based on Alpha playtest data

    Your Creations, Under Attack

Space Engineers has always been about freedom — build anything, go anywhere. Now, for the first time, you must also defend what you’ve built. Hostile Encounters doesn’t just add enemies — it gives your universe teeth, and turns your engineering skill into your best survival tool.

Update your game, reinforce your bulkheads, and watch your back. The Almagest System has visitors — and they’re not here to negotiate.

Drive, Automate & Detonate: Space Engineers 2 Drops Massive VS2.3 Alpha Update

If you’ve been tracking the evolution of the Space Engineers 2 Alpha, it’s time to strap back into your cockpit. Keen Software House has officially deployed its latest milestone update, VS2.3: “Drive, Automate & Detonate.” Living up to its explosive name, this update injects a massive dose of mechanical freedom, advanced automation, expanded planetary warfare, and gruelling survival overhauls into the VRAGE3-powered sandbox.

Here is everything you need to know about how VS2.3 is changing the engineering landscape.

Drive: The Mechanical Toolkit is Complete

For ground-pounders and planet explorers, the days of being restricted to thruster-based movement are over. VS2.3 introduces Wheel blocks, allowing players to engineer everything from nimble scout rovers to towering, resource-hauling mobile bases and trailers.

To complement the existing pistons and rotors, Keen has finally introduced Hinges. This completes the core mechanical toolkit, giving you the power to craft intricate cargo ramps, variable-sweep wings, and complex robotic arms. Even better, newly introduced limits for rotors and pistons make these moving subgrids far easier to tune and control without triggering accidental, physics-defying catastrophes.

Automate: Complex Grids Without the Coding

If you love building self-sustaining industrial loops or reactive defence grids, the automation overhaul in VS2.3 is a game-changer. The update adds three core components to your terminal:

    • The Event Controller: A powerful block capable of tracking real-time grid parameters—such as speed, altitude, power levels, inventory capacity, and weapon ammo—and triggering specific actions based on those conditions.
    • Timer Blocks: Designed to queue up and sequence automated actions, either instantly or after custom-defined delays.
    • Sensors: Allowing your ships and stations to seamlessly detect approaching physical objects, players, or threats.

Whether you want hangar doors that automatically close when your ship leaves, or emergency batteries that kick in when primary power drops below 10%, you can now build deeply logic-driven grids entirely through the game’s native blocks.

    Detonate: Combat and Total Destruction

Space and planetary warfare just got significantly more lethal. Keen Software House has added Warheads (in both small and large grid formats), which can be detonated manually or triggered via your new automation systems.

Furthermore, combat realism has taken a major leap forward:

    • Chain Reactions: Damaged O2/H2 tanks, active reactors, and packed ammo containers will now violently explode if compromised.
    • Heavy Payload Defences: New automated Rocket Turrets and rapid-fire Rocket Launchers have arrived to protect your territory.
    • Character Combat: If you prefer boots-on-the-ground skirmishes, character weapons now feature proper iron sights, complete with projectile impact decals and manual turret controls.

    Survival Reworks and Environmental Threats

Surviving on the planets of the Almagest System is no longer a walk in the park. VS2.3 introduces a dedicated Classic Survival Start, dialling up the challenge to mimic a traditional, harsher survival loop. This brings voxel-based resource yields from terrain, restrictive backpack building limits, adjusted ore distribution, and rebalanced crafting recipes.

Adding to the planetary pressure is the introduction of Wind Physics. Atmospheric weather events, like sandstorms, are no longer purely cosmetic. Strong winds will physically push airborne characters, loose debris, floating objects, and dynamic grids. To help you harness this chaos, the update adds Wind Turbines, allowing you to generate scalable green energy based entirely on local wind speeds.

Behind the Scenes: Optimisation & What’s Next

Alongside 46 brand-new building blocks and the exclusive Pioneer Suit for Pioneer Edition owners, Keen has delivered substantial engine optimisations under the hood. Vegetation culling, shadow rendering, and voxel processing have all been upgraded to keep performance smooth, even in dense forests or during chaotic, high-fracture explosions.

For those tracking the long-term Space Engineers 2 Roadmap, Keen also dropped an exciting development update: the team is prioritising Co-op Multiplayer & NPCs (VS4) ahead of the highly anticipated Water Update (VS3), aiming for a release window around November/December 2026.

    The Verdict

The “Drive, Automate & Detonate” update successfully bridges the gap between raw creativity and practical survival. With robust physics, deep automation logic, and high-stakes combat, the Space Engineers 2 Alpha is quickly shaping up to be a worthy, next-generation successor to the original masterpiece.

Space Engineers 2 is currently available in Playable Alpha on Steam.
