FULL THROTTLE, 8-BIT POWER — ZERO TO BLAST ONTO GAME BOY COLOR: FUTURISTIC MODE 7-STYLE RACER ARRIVES NOVEMBER 5

Think the Game Boy Color can’t keep pace? Think again. UK publisher Thalamus Digital Publishing Ltd. has teamed up with Canadian indie studio Rocketship Park to bring ZERO — a blazing-fast, futuristic racer powered by a clever “Mode 7” style engine — to the legendary handheld, proving that thrills don’t need cutting-edge hardware to be utterly thrilling.

THE LEGENDARY MODE 7 SPIRIT — IN YOUR POCKET

Back in the SNES era, Mode 7 let games like F-Zero and Pilotwings create the illusion of 3D speed on hardware that had no business pulling it off. It was magic — and now, developer Shane McCafferty at Rocketship Park has worked that same kind of magic on the Game Boy Color, coaxing a fluid, high-speed racing engine from hardware most of us packed away decades ago.

“I’ve wanted to push the beloved Game Boy Color to an approximation of Mode 7 for a while now,” McCafferty explains. “The technique was, like all cool things, stolen from the demo scene — the real fun was turning that into something that feels thrilling and fun to play. I hope people have as much fun playing ZERO as I had coaxing it from the Game Boy.”

ZERO isn’t just a technical curiosity — it’s a full-blooded racer. Antigravity craft, neon-lit circuits, and velocity that pushes the GBC to its limits. This is speed reimagined for the handheld generation.

THREE CUPS. NINE TRACKS. NO BRAKES.

ZERO packs plenty of race into every cartridge image:

    • Three distinct cup challenges — rising in difficulty, testing reflexes and memory
    • Nine unique tracks — each with its own layout, hazards, and racing rhythm
    • Boost system with strategy — start every race with 11 power units; boosting consumes 3, but overtaking rivals restores 1. Burn it all and you’ll stall — play smart and you’ll pull away
    • Tight, responsive controls — built from the ground up for the GBC’s physical buttons, designed to feel instantly familiar yet deeply satisfying

This isn’t just about going fast — it’s about managing your momentum, picking your overtakes, and hitting the boost at exactly the right moment.

    A LEGACY ON THE CIRCUIT

For Thalamus, ZERO represents the next evolution in a proud line of Game Boy racing titles. “It’s always a delight to unleash a new Rocketship Park game on the public, and ZERO is no exception,” says Thalamus founder and CEO Andy Roberts. “Developer Shane McCafferty has an impressive legacy of Game Boy racing games under his belt. ZERO takes everything he learned on titles like Nitro and Hero GP and elevates the genre to new heights — and speeds!”

HOW TO PLAY — YOUR WAY

ZERO launches 5 November 2026 and will be available via itch.io from Thalamus Digital, priced at $1.99 USD (pay-what-you-want from that baseline). Play it on your terms:

    • On PC via emulators such as mGBA
    • On original hardware using a flash cart (EverDrive or compatible)
    • On Analogue Pocket and other compatible retro handhelds

THE FUTURE IS RETRO — DIVE IN

ZERO stands as a reminder: great games are about creativity, not just clock speeds. Rocketship Park has squeezed every last drop of potential from the Game Boy Color, delivering a racer that feels fresh, moves fast, and honours the classics that inspired it.
