  • Boots on the Ground: War Thunder Infantry Enters Massive 128-Player Closed Beta 3!

Boots on the Ground: War Thunder Infantry Enters Massive 128-Player Closed Beta 3!

If you thought War Thunder was just about heavy armour, soaring fighter jets, and naval broadsides, think again. Gaijin Entertainment is officially dropping players right into the mud. The highly anticipated third stage of the War Thunder Infantry Closed Beta Test (CBT) is officially kicking off this July, and it is bringing some seriously massive upgrades to the battlefield.

We are talking about a major scale-up, fresh modern hardware, and a brand-new combat zone that changes the pacing of the game entirely. Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming test phase.

Welcome to Kivu: A Massive Central African Warzone

The centrepiece of CBT Phase 3 is Kivu, an all-new map set in Central Africa that is roughly four times larger than previous infantry locations like Granitograd and Al-Massa.

Because the map is so vast, Gaijin has optimised its server infrastructure to handle true large-scale warfare. This test phase reintroduces the 64-vs-64 format, allowing up to 128 players to clash simultaneously in the same match.

To prevent this massive map from turning into a walking simulator, the developers are introducing several experimental gameplay mechanics:

    • Forward Respawns: For the first time, players can spawn directly onto capture points controlled by their team, keeping the pressure right on the front lines.
    • Squad Transport Vehicles: The test introduces a five-player light passenger car, allowing squads to rotate across the map together. If the driver gets sniped, any passenger can switch to the driver’s seat on the fly.
    • Total Dominance: A new ticket-drain mechanic means that if your team controls all five capture points at once, the enemy’s victory points bleed away even faster.

Modern Arsenals & Distinct Soldier Classes

Both factions are getting unique, region-specific modern gear and specialised loadouts. Rather than every soldier having access to all gear, player classes have been heavily revised to encourage strategic teamwork. Special-purpose equipment like RPGs, MANPADS, and drones are now locked to specific roles.

Expect to wield top-tier small arms and operate heavy support machinery:

    • USA Forces: M4A1, SCAR-L, XM5, and the M110 SDMR, backed by M1A2 SEP V2 main battle tanks, LAV-AD air defense systems, and AH-64A Apache helicopters.
    • USSR Forces: AK-12, AK-15, SVDM, and the Kord 6P67, supported by T-90M tanks, 2S6 Tunguska systems, and Mi-28N Havoc attack helicopters.

Smarter Arcade Battles and Visual Tweaks

Arcade Battles are making a return, but with a major tactical overhaul to the marker display logic. To stop players from simply shooting at red UI indicators through dense foliage, markers will now only appear if you have a direct, unobstructed line of sight to the enemy model. If they duck behind smoke, walls, or trees, the marker vanishes. Furthermore, heavily equipped soldiers will now move faster in Arcade mode compared to Realistic mode to keep the match pacing snappy.

Gaijin has also listened to community feedback by adding a dedicated graphics settings tab specifically for the Infantry mode, meaning you can tune your performance for ground combat without messing up your main vehicle settings.

    How to Join the Fight

If you haven’t yet experienced War Thunder from a boots-on-the-ground perspective, the doors aren’t completely shut. Players can head over to the official War Thunder website right now to apply for CBT access before the July testing window begins.

Get your squad ready—the battlefield is about to get a whole lot louder.

  • War Thunder ‘Heavy Cavalry’ Update Brings Electronic Warfare and Modern Armour to the Battlefield

War Thunder ‘Heavy Cavalry’ Update Brings Electronic Warfare and Modern Armour to the Battlefield

Gaijin Entertainment has dropped its latest major content update for War Thunder, and it is a massive one. Titled Heavy Cavalry, this patch completely changes the meta for high-tier combined battles by introducing advanced electronic warfare, highly anticipated modern main battle tanks (MBTs), and a diverse fleet of international vehicles across land, air, and sea.

If you thought high-tier matches were chaotic before, brace yourselves—the battlefield is about to get a lot more technical.

    Electronic Warfare Alters the Skies

The headline feature of the Heavy Cavalry update is the official arrival of Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARMs) and Electronic Support Measures (ESM). This completely transforms the dynamic between top-tier pilots and radar-guided air defence systems.

    • Anti-Radiation Missiles: Weapons like the AGM-88 HARM, ALARM, and Soviet Kh-family missiles can now lock onto enemy radar emissions and track them directly to the source.
    • ESM Equipment: Pilots can utilise ESM to locate signal sources, pinpoint threats, and seamlessly guide weapons to the target.

AA battery players will have to be much more strategic about keeping their radars active, or risk becoming an instant target for suppression of enemy air defences (SEAD).

    Top-Tier Armour Reinforcements

Ground forces are receiving a serious firepower upgrade with a fresh line of heavily armoured juggernauts.

    NationNew AdditionsKey Features
USAM1A2 SEP v3Enhanced frontal turret protection and lethal M829A3 APFSDS rounds.
Russia?-90M Arena-MAdvanced Active Protection System (APS) capabilities for increased survivability.
Global TreesIndonesian Leopard 2RIBringing unique multi-national representation to high-tier setups.

    Global Aviation and Naval Expansion

The update expands the horizons of War Thunder’s global vehicle catalogue. Air combat welcomes the Argentinian IA 58A Pucará, a highly agile, twin-turboprop ground attack aircraft armed with 20 mm cannons and highly flexible payloads—making it a perfect pick for close air support. Players will also be able to take the Serbian J-22M1A Orao into modern strike missions.

Meanwhile, naval captains can look forward to bolstering their fleets with the legendary German warship Admiral Scheer, alongside the heavy-hitting USS North Carolina, ensuring that naval engagements remain just as explosive as the action on land.

Quality of Life & Visual Reworks

Beyond the vehicles, Gaijin has rolled out some fantastic quality-of-life updates:

    • Map Reworks: Classic maps like Ash River and Winter Ardennes have received complete visual and graphical overhauls while keeping their familiar tactical layouts.
    • Arrestor Cables: Ground airfields now feature functional arresting gear, giving aircraft equipped with tailhooks a much faster way to come to a halt on short runways.
    • Manoeuvre Kill Rewards: A highly requested “crash reward” mechanic is now live, meaning you’ll finally get credit if an enemy aircraft crashes near you while trying to dodge your pursuit without taking direct damage.

War Thunder: Heavy Cavalry is live now. Whether you are hunting SAM sites from the cockpit of a jet or trading shots in the latest Abrams variant, this update promises to reshuffle the tactical deck.

  • The Snail Drops the Big One: Strategic Nuclear Bombers Head to War Thunder

The Snail Drops the Big One: Strategic Nuclear Bombers Head to War Thunder

For years, the “nuke” in War Thunder has been the ultimate flex—a rare reward for players dominating a Ground Realistic Battle, allowing them to spawn in a specialised aircraft and end the match with a cinematic mushroom cloud. But everything is about to change.

Gaijin Entertainment has officially announced that Strategic Nuclear Bomber tech trees are being added to the game. No longer confined to rare killstreaks, these legendary behemoths of the Cold War are becoming a permanent, researchable fixture of the aviation hangars.

From Tactical Streaks to Strategic Dominance

The update, titled “Nuclear Thunder,” introduces a paradigm shift in how high-tier matches play out. While tactical nukes (5–30 kilotons) have been the standard for game-ending streaks, the new Strategic Bombers will carry megaton-class payloads capable of reshaping the battlefield—literally.

“Strategic aviation will change everything,” the developers noted in their latest devblog. “Players will move from familiar high-explosive bombs to tactical, and finally, strategic nuclear weapons within a single escalating battle.”

The New Titans: B-52H and Tu-95M

The spearhead of this new class features two of history’s most iconic long-range bombers. These aren’t just larger targets for interceptors; they are flying fortresses equipped with the latest (for their era) Electronic Countermeasures (ECM).

    The American Giant: B-52H Stratofortress

    • Rank: VI (Event Vehicle/Researchable)
    • Key Features: The first 8-engine aircraft in the game, a 20mm Vulcan tail turret, and a massive payload capacity (up to 51 x 750 lbs bombs or nuclear ordnance).
    • Survival: Heavy focus on thermal imaging and a massive suite of countermeasures to ward off incoming SAMs.

    The Soviet Bear: Tu-95M

    • Rank: VI (Event Vehicle/Researchable)
    • Key Features: Access to the FAB-9000 (the largest conventional bomb in the game), 23mm defensive cannons, and that iconic contra-rotating propeller roar.
    • Survival: Advanced Radar Warning Receivers (RWR) and high-altitude performance.

New Mechanics: SEAD and Anti-Radiation Missiles

You might be wondering: How does a massive bomber survive in a world of Pantsirs and Patriots? To level the playing field, Gaijin is introducing Anti-Radiation Missiles (ARMs). For the first time, players can engage in SEAD (Suppression of Enemy Air Defences) missions.

    • USA: AGM-88A HARM
    • USSR: Kh-58U and Kh-25MPU

These missiles home in on radar emissions, allowing players to knock out AA batteries from a distance before the strategic bombers move in for the final blow.

    How to Get Them

The “Nuclear Thunder” event is currently live and runs until April 13th, 2026. By participating in the conflict between the USA and USSR on a new Central American map, players can complete stages to permanently unlock the B-52H and Tu-95M for their regular research trees.

A word of caution: While these aircraft will be available in standard matches after the event, they will primarily use conventional armaments. The “Strategic Nuke” remains tied to specific high-escalation game modes to ensure the game doesn’t end in a flash every 30 seconds.

    TechMash Verdict

Adding strategic bombers is a bold move for War Thunder. It fulfils a long-standing community desire to fly the “Big Three” (B-52, Tu-95, and hopefully the Vulcan later), but it presents a massive balancing challenge. With the introduction of Rank IX aircraft earlier this year, the “Snail” is clearly pushing the game into the modern era with no signs of slowing down.

  • Boots on the Ground! War Thunder’s “Line of Contact” Update Changes Everything

Boots on the Ground! War Thunder’s “Line of Contact” Update Changes Everything

The roar of engines, the screech of metal, and the thunder of artillery—War Thunder has always been about the epic clash of vehicles. But get ready for a battlefield revolution! The “Line of Contact” major update is here, and it’s introducing the one thing many thought would never happen: playable infantry!

This isn’t just another update with new tanks and planes; it’s a fundamental shift that opens up an entirely new dimension of combined-arms warfare. Let’s dive into everything you need to know about this game-changing addition and the other exciting content arriving with it.

Infantry: The New Face of War Thunder

The most significant feature of “Line of Contact” is the introduction of player-controlled infantry squads. This isn’t integrated into the main game modes yet; it’s being launched as a separate, dedicated game mode for closed beta testing (CBT), ensuring it doesn’t disrupt the core vehicle experience.

    • A Modern Battlefield: This new mode focuses on modern warfare, featuring soldiers with advanced, customizable weaponry, gear, and vehicle support. Think high-tech assaults, tactical building clear-outs, and intense street battles.
    • Squad-Based Combat: You won’t control just one soldier. Similar to other titles by Gaijin, you will control a squad leader in first-person, with AI troops backing you up. This allows for more dynamic and strategic engagements.
    • New Roles, New Threats: Infantry brings new tactical depth. Expect to see:
      • Anti-Tank Specialists (ready to ambush your favorite tank)
      • Anti-Air Specialists equipped with MANPADS (making the skies a lot more dangerous for low-flying aircraft!)
      • Engineers and Special Weapons like reconnaissance drones and FPV cameras.
    • The New Map: Granitograd: Battles in the infantry mode will take place on specially designed, highly detailed urban locations, such as the brand-new Eastern European map, Granitograd. These maps feature multi-story buildings and ample cover, perfect for infantry tactics.

Note: The initial closed beta test focuses on modern US and USSR/Russian forces and will be available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles.

    New Vehicles & Arsenal Additions

No major War Thunder update is complete without a massive influx of new vehicles across all branches! “Line of Contact” delivers, adding dozens of new machines to the battle.

    • High-Tier Ground: Expect powerful additions like the British Ajax light tank and the US M10 Booker, designed to support ground forces.
    • Air Power: The skies are getting even more competitive with the introduction of fan-favorites like the legendary Soviet interceptor, the MiG-25 PD, as well as the J-10C and F/A-18 Super Hornet. Aircraft like the EF-2000 and F-2000A are also getting ordnance updates, allowing them to carry even more air-to-air missiles.
    • Naval Forces: Big ships are also sailing in, with the US battleship USS South Dakota and the British battleship HMS Prince of Wales joining the fray.

Quality of Life & Map Overhauls

Beyond the flashy new content, the update brings essential improvements to existing gameplay:

    • Hangar Overhaul: The hangar is getting a massive graphical makeover with more detailed interiors, improved lighting, and new dynamic effects. You can now visually inspect your armament and the damage it can cause!
    • Shell Fragmentation Rework: The fragmentation fields for HEAT, HE, and AP shells have been recalculated, resulting in a significant increase in the number and density of fragments. This could fundamentally change how post-penetration damage works for these shell types.
    • Poland (Winter) Graphics Update: The classic Poland map is receiving a complete graphical facelift for its winter variant, making the environment much more detailed and atmospheric.

The Verdict: A New Era for War Thunder?

The “Line of Contact” update marks the biggest, most ambitious change to War Thunder in years. The introduction of infantry, even in a separate mode, has the potential to revitalize the game and complete the long-awaited trinity of infantry, armor, and air superiority.

Whether you’re excited to snipe from a rooftop or command your tank to blow up that very building, this update promises a vastly expanded and thrilling experience. Jump onto the Dev Server (if it’s open) or sign up for the Infantry CBT to get an early look at this historic moment in War Thunder history!
