Retro Vibes & Digital Murders: ‘Murder Meet Cute’ Takes Centre Stage at InterfaceX26

The indie gaming scene is about to get a lot more nostalgic—and a little more lethal. Kitico, the developer-led collective, has officially announced that their upcoming title, Murder Meet Cute, has been selected as a World Premiere main feature for InterfaceX26.

If you haven’t heard of InterfaceX26 yet, it’s time to plug in. Running from April 27 to May 4, 2026, this week-long Steam event is a massive celebration of the “Fake OS” genre—games that take place entirely within digital interfaces, desktops, and simulated operating systems.

    What is Murder Meet Cute?

Developed by a talented, remote team of “girls, gays, and theys” across Canada and Europe, Murder Meet Cute is an interactive fiction thriller that feels like a lost artefact from the late 90s.

You play as Amy, a goth computer repair technician in a small town plagued by mysterious deaths. The gameplay loop is a clever mix of narrative exploration and high-stakes puzzling:

    • 90s OS Simulation: Navigate simulated Windows-esque desktops, read ICQ-style chat logs, and dig through private emails to uncover the town’s secrets.
    • Crypto-Nonographic Debugging: To fix your clients’ PCs, you’ll solve Picross-style puzzles that transform into “repulsive viruses” once completed.
    • Industrial Aesthetic: The game features art direction heavily inspired by 90s FMV (Full Motion Video) titles and a custom soundtrack that captures the moody grit of 90s industrial music.

“A power-fantasy roleplay of a badass goth telling customers where to shove it while uncovering a conspiracy? Sign us up.”

    The InterfaceX26 Showcase

As a main feature of the May 2nd live showcase, Murder Meet Cute will be highlighted alongside other standout “Fake OS” titles like Forbidden Solitaire and Desktop Explorer. The event will be hosted by industry veterans Kurt Indovina and Lucy James (GameSpot), featuring guest appearances from creators like Jesse Cox and Dodger.

    Why “Fake OS” Matters

The festival isn’t just about selling games; it’s a grassroots movement. More than 150 developers have joined forces to advocate for “Fake OS” to become an official Steam tag. By tagging these games during the festival, players can help define a genre that blends immersion with UI-driven storytelling.

    How to Get Involved

    • Wishlist Now: You can find Murder Meet Cute on Steam to keep up with its development.
    • Watch the Premiere: Tune in on May 2, 2026, to see the exclusive world premiere trailer during the InterfaceX26 livestream.
