If you watched the video above without knowing where it had come from, it would be easy to confuse it with a video from a games developer, it has the look of a battle royale in the making, yet this is no game, this is real and if DARPA has their way this could be the future of warfare.
However, not to state the obvious, the development and testing of autonomous air and ground vehicles sort of makes us think of the Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines movie, where the USAF had a research centre that was working on exactly the same idea.
While making machines such as drones and self-driving vehicles can be good making them autonomous where they are able to hunt a target and take immediate action without the chain of command being involved is a little bit scary, unless they have a kill switch built-in that cannot be overridden.
DARPA OFFensive Swarm-Enabled Tactics (OFFSET) researchers recently tested swarms of autonomous air and ground vehicles at the Leschi Town Combined Arms Collective Training Facility (CACTF), located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in Washington. The Leschi Town, field experiment is the fourth of six planned experiments for the OFFSET program, which seeks to develop large-scale teams of collaborative autonomous systems capable of supporting ground forces operating in urban environments.
