The benefits of augmented reality in Industry 4.0

This technology provides countless benefits to entrepreneurs and operators, by making an effective diagnosis of the operation, the processes and at the same time being able to detect any failure in real-time. AR technology is seen as one of the solutions for a more complex modern industry.

Sometimes we believe that augmented reality is simply an entertainment issue or something associated with video games. However, this technology is already part of the industry and is currently taking on great importance. In fact, the global size of the augmented reality market is forecast to grow 7.7 times between 2018 and 2022, according to the market statistics portal, Statista.

And it is that thanks to this type of technological practices, the industry has been able to begin to improve different processes and at the same time have more effective dynamics. An example of this is that, by implementing augmented reality software and tools like HMT-1 from RealWear, companies can train engineers to handle machinery in production plants, which reduces the rate of occupational hazards, lowers costs and reinforces learning.

When operators, maintenance engineers or programmers want to detect some type of failure, sometimes in the industry it is complicated and time-consuming. It is there where augmented reality and its system visually facilitate the diagnosis of the failure in the system in less time or in real-time, also taking care of the safety of the operators.

RealWear, three years ago, launched an innovative RealWear AR tool, which increases efficiency and lowers costs with instant diagnosis and non-contact maintenance. Its main benefits are focused on:

– Reduce downtime, where the technician or operator can virtually open the electrical cabinet doors.

– It speeds up operation and maintenance, accessing information faster and generating immediate access in the field to real-time data, user manuals, instructions, diagrams, etc.

– Helps reduce human error by guiding operators step-by-step to complete maintenance procedures.

RealWear HMT-1 is an AR smartglass equipped with a 16 MP camera, capable of taking higher quality images than the iPhone 11. It has a strong and durable frame (it can fall from a height of 2 meters without being damaged). While the recording capability is quite impressive, it can record at a speed of 30 fps. This device is equipped with an LCD screen whose viewing angle can be adjusted according to the user’s needs, making it able to compete with similar AR devices, alerts from Microsoft or Vuzix.

The impact of this type of technological solutions within the industry is undeniable. The world continues to evolve towards increasingly digital processes and industries must consider these types of solutions within their operational and maintenance processes. For this reason, business sectors associated with mining, food and beverages, cement, water treatment, among others, have begun to develop this type of technological environment with a high component of augmented reality solutions, as allies that allow them to optimize their operation in terms of efficiency, productivity and safety.
