Frost, Fire & Iron Rails — Frostrail Blasts Into Steam Next Fest With Public Demo!

Through the snow-blasted wastes, one thing moves. One thing survives. Frostrail — the brutal co-op survival FPS from Barotrauma developer FakeFish and publisher Shiro Unlimited — is pulling into Steam Next Fest, with a full public demo running October 19–26, 2026 on Steam.

From the creators of the acclaimed underwater survival sensation Barotrauma comes a new nightmare — this time above the waves, where the cold kills faster than any beast.

The World Freezes. Your Train Endures.

The empire is gone. A pact with the Void has scoured the land, leaving endless ice, creeping horror, and silence broken only by the howl of the wind — and the chug of your engine. As one of the Penitent Gardeners, you and your crew roam aboard an armoured steam train: your home, your fortress, your only lifeline.

    • Your train is everything — fuel the mighty Eden Engine, manage power across systems, and keep it moving. Upgrade carriages, mount weapon stations, reinforce hull plating, and turn your locomotive into a rolling stronghold
    • Scavenge or starve — venture out into the frozen ruins to gather supplies, salvage scrap, and hunt for fuel. But every step away from the fire is dangerous. The frost saps your warmth, blizzards blind you, and something ancient stalks the dark
    • Fight the unseen — revenants, corrupted creatures, and eldritch horrors haunt the wastes. Craft weapons, stand together, and defend your train when they close in. Fall alone — or stand and burn as one
    • Solo or 4-player co-op — brave the wasteland entirely on your own, or gather up to three allies to share the watch, split duties, and survive the worst together

Built On Experience — A New Kind of Survival

FakeFish earned its reputation with Barotrauma, a game where the deadliest dangers were often the crew itself — and that same DNA runs through Frostrail. Every system matters: engine pressure, heat levels, resource stockpiles, and defensive readiness. In co-op, roles split naturally — someone stokes the furnace, someone scouts ahead, someone stands watch — and communication is the difference between reaching the next station and freezing in the drift.

“We want to give survivors a real sense of being stranded and fighting back,” said Ez Jämsen, Lead Designer at FakeFish. “The train isn’t just a vehicle — it’s your last safe place in a world that’s forgotten how to be kind.”

    What The Demo Delivers

The Steam Next Fest preview offers a substantial slice of the experience:

    • A stretch of frozen wasteland to explore, complete with distinct biomes and ruined settlements
    • Full train operation and basic upgrading — feel the weight of the controls and the reward of improvement
    • Encounters with the wasteland’s dangers — from biting cold to creeping things
    • A taste of the progression loop: scavenge, craft, reinforce, push deeper

    The Road Ahead

Frostrail is targeting an Early Access launch in Q4 2026, with roughly a year planned in that phase to expand biomes, deepen crafting and combat, and refine co-op dynamics alongside the community. The price will rise alongside added content — making Early Access the most affordable time to board.

  • The icy depths of Europa are about to get a lot more crowded—and a lot more permanent

The icy depths of Europa are about to get a lot more crowded—and a lot more permanent

During the latest Triple-i Initiative showcase on 9 April 2026, developer Undertow Games and publisher Daedalic Entertainment finally pulled back the curtain on the first gameplay for the highly anticipated Barotrauma: Home & Harbor expansion. Since the game’s 1.0 release in 2023, fans have been hungry for more than just survival, and it looks like the developers are ready to deliver a full-scale civilisation builder under the sea.

Setting Down Roots in the Abyss

The headline feature of the expansion is Outpost Ownership and Base Building. For the first time, your crew won’t just be passing through those dingy underwater stations to sell loot and cure parasites; you’ll be able to claim them for yourself.

    • Customisation: Use new modules to expand your outpost, tailoring it for heavy industry, scientific research, or deep-sea defence.
    • Management: You’ll need to manage NPC inhabitants and establish workshops to build a thriving underwater economy.
    • Conquest: If you find an outpost you like that belongs to someone else? You can take it by force, assuming your hull can handle the heat.

    Enter the Descendants

The gameplay reveal also introduced a mysterious new faction: The Descendants. This technocratic group leans heavily into transhumanist horror, utilising alien technology and body modification to survive the pressure.

Their arrival brings a host of new content, including:

    • Cybernetic Enhancements: New ways to “upgrade” your crew beyond simple talents.
    • Energy Weapons: High-tech tools to fend off Europa’s increasingly aggressive wildlife.
    • Deep Lore: New questlines that delve into the origins of these body-modified sailors.

    A Living, Breathing Europa

Beyond the building mechanics, Home & Harbor aims to make the world feel reactive. The Dynamic World Update ensures that NPC factions interact with each other independently of the player. Roaming submarines will now move between outposts, directly impacting the local economy and making trade routes feel like living arteries of the ocean.

    The Spring Update is Live

While the expansion is slated for Autumn 2026, there is plenty to do right now. Launching alongside the reveal was the Spring Update, a free content drop that reworks Tier 1 submarines, introduces monster deconstruction, and adds several quality-of-life improvements. It’s the perfect way to sharpen your skills before the responsibility of running an entire colony lands on your shoulders.

Pro Tip: Keep an eye on your reputation. With the new faction interaction system, a “friendly gift” to one group might turn you into a target for another. Just make sure the gift isn’t Husk-infected.
