Founded by Vince Dickson and model Megan Williams, HUNU is a startup designing products that take on single-use plastics with convenient reusable alternatives.
Their first product, which is live on Kickstarter now, is a reusable coffee cup that folds down to fit in your pocket. It was designed to solve a personal pain point; the inconvenience of reusable coffee cups. Despite what most people think, paper coffee cups aren’t recyclable, meaning that millions of them end up in landfill every day. Reusable cups are an easy solution but they are big and bulky and therefore often not with you when you need one.
According to founder Vince Dickson “We came up with the concept for the HUNU cup after learning just how bad the disposable coffee cup issue was. When we went looking for a reusable alternative we pretty quickly realised that none existed that were easy to carry around. So despite our best efforts we often didn’t have our cup with us when we actually needed one. You can have the best cup ever made but if it’s not with you when you need it, it is worthless!”
Working with a London based team, Megan and Vince eventually settled on a design that folded down to a small 2cm high disk.
“It’s small enough to not only fit in any handbag or coat but it even slips into my jeans pocket. It’s become something I always have with me, as it’s so easy to carry around all day. That was our goal from the beginning. To create something that could equal the convenience of disposable cups by being with you at all times.” says Megan Williams.
All the materials used are both FDA and LFGB (the highest level of European certification) food-grade certified. The body of the cup is food-grade silicone, chosen not only for its incredible durability but also for the fact that it is a very inert material that is BPA free, non-toxic and doesn’t leach any of the nasty chemicals that plastics give off when heated. The lids are made from bamboo fibre which is a very fast-growing sustainable crop.
The packaging was also designed to have the least possible impact. The recycled card packaging is slim enough to fit through a letterbox, meaning a smaller delivery footprint and more convenience for customers. It also means that mailing details can go straight on the box, resulting in no extra packaging. There is no plastic used at all.
