Battlefield 2042: Specs, release date and more

Battlefield 2042 is the next game in the iconic first-person shooter franchise distributed by Electronic Arts. The next instalment in this franchise will be released for PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One and PC.

Here’s all the information we have regarding the upcoming game.

New Specs

Battlefield 2042 requirements on PC may have been revealed in an email sent to players who are set to participate in six technical tests scheduled by EA to take place in August.

Apparently, Battlefield 2042 won’t be as demanding as the gaming community expected. The minimum requirements are expected to be 8GB of RAM and a GTX 1050 graphics card (or equivalent). While these specs may not be available on the most affordable computers out there, they are still well below high-budget computers.

When talking about recommended configuration, there’s still a remarkable leap: a PC with 16GB of RAM and a GTX 2060 graphics card is the main suggestion. Still, these are not entirely absurd requirements, considering that the game will be released for the current generation of consoles.

The EA game will feature an open beta for everyone who pre-orders the game and EA Play subscribers. Although it has not yet been confirmed, the beta is expected to be available to fans in September, while the official release is scheduled for October 22nd, 2021.

No Ranked or eSports Modes

During EA Play Live 2021, a curious new Battlefield 2042 mode was unveiled: Portal, in which players will be able to mix elements of the new game with classic games from the franchise, including Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 3 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in special and custom matches.

Last month, Battlefield 2042 design director Justin Wiebe confirmed that the game wouldn’t feature eSports or ranked modes at launch and that the focus would be firstly on fan feedback. For the Battlefield franchise, which is still trying to make up for the disappointing Battlefield V, this could be a harsh blow as eSports continue to grow exponentially. Some of its main rivals, such as Call of Duty, have met revitalised success through these modes and have generated considerable hype in the gaming community.

Over recent years, eSports has evolved into a major industry with a consistent turnout in the millions. The leagues continue to go from strength to strength and draw avid devotion from fans, particularly during popular tournaments such as the LCS Summer 2021 games, the professional eSports league for the MOBA PC game League of Legends. Astoundingly, the prize pool for this competition is currently $200,000 USD and Netherlands-based Team Liquid are at 2/1 odds according to eSports betting markets, to be named the outright winners. It’s evident that there’s potential for a wider Battlefield following, should developers consider the potential for an eSports avenue further down the line. Whether they can be swayed further down the line remains to be seen.

New Chapter for Battlefield

As its name implies, Battlefield 2042 is set in a futuristic environment, abandoning the previous World Wars theme. In the upcoming game, a new large-scale conflict between the United States and Russia will be at the centre of the narrative, as well as a new and large faction of humanity that has lost its lands and countries, known as No-Pats.

Wiebe, senior design director at Ripple Effect in Los Angeles, who is helping DICE develop Battlefield 2042, promised that the games’ bots will be difficult to distinguish from real players because of a new and highly intelligent system.

When EA announced that Battlefield 2042 matches would have bots to fill the voids, gamers’ reactions were not very favourable, because of the usual perception that bots have strange, unnatural and unintelligent behaviours, but Wiebe promised that the game’s bot system would be different.

If you can’t wait to play the new Battlefield, you can always revisit Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V, which are temporarily available for free for subscribers of Amazon’s Prime Gaming service.
