Blackjack Variants. Why Tradition isn’t Always Best

Humans are creatures of habit and routine. It has to be this way or we’d never be able to sort through the thousands of new details we’d discover every hour. Imagine if each job had to be done differently every time an employee clocked in. However, too much of a routine also tends to breed contempt and boredom. There are only so many laps of Mario Kart that somebody can do before it starts to grate on the nerves.

Of course, the key to all this is balance. Blackjack, one of the oldest games currently offered by online casinos, has gone largely unchanged since it was introduced to the world in the late 16th or early 17th century. In fact, even much of the strategy involved in playing blackjack can be memorised, as it has been optimised to such a fine point that it rarely – if ever – requires updating.

As competition for casino players grows, though, blackjack has gone through a mild metamorphosis. The website Paddy Power now has a number of variants of online blackjack, including All Bets, Buster, and live dealer, that seek to inject a little variety into the traditional way of playing the storied game. Let’s take a look at how these modern evolutions stack up to the old favourite.

Live Streaming

Live dealer blackjack is one of the more recent amendments to the game that’s only possible due to the internet and, more specifically, live-streamed content. This kind of lobby works similarly to the content available on Twitch. It’s a streaming service that allows presenters and an audience to interact over common ground, such as blackjack, roulette, and several other casino games.

Played this way, blackjack becomes a much more social game. Live dealer-based experiences also add to the authenticity of the game by using a green screen to create themed environments, like speakeasies or a real-life casino, and by removing the RNG machines from the equation. Dice are thrown and cards are dealt as they would be in a brick-and-mortar establishment, namely, by hand.

This kind of media is on the high-end of things, technologically speaking, which means that it requires a good internet connection to run. It is based solely on HTML5, however, a standard technology on interactive websites.

Buster Blackjack

Alternatively, All Bets Blackjack brings the game more in line with modern slots, by adding bonus options. These special features increase the number of ways for the player to win and include Top 3, Perfect Pairs, and 21+3 side bets. It’s a much more flamboyant version of blackjack but doesn’t deviate too far from the established formula. For fans of the previous game, live dealer blackjack, All Bets can also be played this way.

Finally, Buster Blackjack, while sometimes melded with All Bets as another bonus feature, is designed to help the player take advantage of the dealer’s misfortune. In brief, this mode returns a 2,000x return on a wager if the total of the croupier’s cards exceeds 21. Call it revenge, at last.

Overall, blackjack is a continuously evolving game despite its perception as a rather rigid example of a casino game.
