Hollywood Reporter: Whoopi Goldberg Added to Cast of Skydance Project “Luck”

According to Hollywood Reporter, Whoopi Goldberg is set to join the cast of “Luck,” which is a project by Skydance Animation Studios, Apple, and Paramount Pictures. Luck, which is an animated feature film, is expected to be released on Feb 18, 2022. The film was originally scheduled to be released in March 2021, but the release was delayed to next year. Apple has secured the distribution rights for the animated feature film. Skydance Animation is led by legendary animation executive John Lasseter, who has previously been the creative head for Disney and Pixar. He was won Oscars for “Toy Story” and “Tin Toy” and has been highly instrumental in the success of several other animated feature films. 

The plot of “Luck” revolves around the battle between organizations of Back Luck and Good Luck. It features the world’s unluckiest girl as she finds a power greater than luck itself through her journey into a mystical world of magical creatures. Whoopi Goldberg will provide the vocals for the character of The Captain, who is the head of security of Land of Good Luck. The other high-profile cast member is Jane Fonda, who will be lending her voice to the character of CEO of Land of Good Luck. “Luck” will be directed by Peggy Holmes, who directed “The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning.”

“Luck” is one of several projects expected by the multi-year deal between Apple and Skydance Animation. The feature film and TV deal were signed in early 2021 to develop and deliver content for kids and families. The increasing popularity of Apple TV+ has seen it spread to over 100 countries. “Luck” will be released on Apply TV+ and cinema theaters in 2022. Other projects between Apple and Skydance include “Search of WondLa” and “Spellbound.”

Whoopi Goldberg 

The addition of Whoopi Goldberg to “Luck” has added to the hype and excitement for the film. Goldberg has won an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress for her performance in “Ghost.” She is the only African American woman and one of few artists who have won an Emmy, Oscar Grammy, and Tony award. Goldberg has seen remarkable success as an entrepreneur, comedian, author, humanitarian, actor, and television personality. 

Goldberg got her first break in the Spielberg drama film “The Color Purple.” Since then, she has starred in several memorable films including “Sister Act,” “The Lion King,” “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and more. She has also been a highly successful performer and producer of Broadway products. Her Grammy Award in 1986 was for “Whoopi Goldberg: Original Broadway Show Recording.” Her Emmy Award was for the daytime talk show “The View,” and her Tony Award was as a producer for the musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”

The partnership deal with Apple offers Skydance Animation to become the world’s leading animation content producer. Skydance Animation is part of Skydance Media which was founded in 2006 by David Ellison. The Skydance Animation Studios was founded in 2017 and currently led by John Lasseter, who will be based out of the company headquarters in Los Angeles, CA.
