Video games used to be something that people simply played because they had fun doing it. To follow this line of thinking, studios of the time were content with putting out video games that people could enjoy playing without having to put too much effort into it. However, different people have different tastes in entertainment. There will likely be many people who like enjoy gambling on the plethora of casino sites that exist online. Having access to more options are popular with people as it means that they have a range of selections to choose from. In the same way, those who appreciated difficulty in video games would have appreciated studios developing games that were more suited to them.
Difficulty in video games
The difficulty function is fundamental to any video game as it allows people to adjust the challenge that they are getting. While some people are happy to fly through the game on easy mode, this can often be unsatisfying as there is no struggle. This is not unlike one of the cores rules of writing characters in fiction; characters should always have some kind of struggle, and not succeed at every opportunity. By including a difficulty function, people can adjust the game to the point where they feel it provides the best challenge for them, and so it is an inclusive way of getting even more enjoyment out of video games.
Difficulty for difficulty’ sake
Then there are also video games that are difficult just because studios wanted to make a game that is hard to beat. The line of thinking behind this is that those who purchase a game like this know what they’re getting into – that satisfying, rewarding feeling after the game is beaten. While these are not suited for casual gamers, they can be fun to watch as the level of skill that is required for some of these is incredible. Here are some of the hardest video games ever:
Dark Souls – Veterans of the gaming industry will know that this series deserves a mention on any list regarding difficulty. This is because it is an exercise on how to die but also how to learn from that death. Enemies in Dark Souls games are not annoying, they are fair. It is always within the player’s skill to overcome the enemies in the game and they will never be caught in a position where it is impossible to win.
Cuphead – This game annoys gamers with how charming and cute it is because it is such an inversion of the truth – the game does not make one happy to play, it has the opposite effect. With just 3 points of health, players will have their work cut out in this energetic platformer.
Rainbow Six: Siege – Not all hard games are single player only, as Siege shows so perfectly. This FPS is notorious for its emphasis on tactics over aim, something that will make new players feel incompetent. However, for some people, everything just clicks and those are the people who carry on playing it indefinitely.
These are some of the hardest games that people can right now, and downloading any one of them might lead to hours of frustration but the rewarding feeling in the end is always worth it.
