The Stanley Parable With a Loaded Rifle: ‘War Fantasy’ is the Ultimate Technophobic Mindfk

The modern military shooter has a formula. You drop in, follow the waypoint, shoot the bad guys, and feel like an absolute hero. But a freshly dropped announcement trailer from indie developer Non-Euclidean is about to violently tear up that script.

Enter War Fantasy, an upcoming psychological horror FPS that aims to systematically dismantle the genre. Described by its creators as “The Stanley Parable with a loaded rifle,” this title is a deeply unsettling, technophobic dive into how the line between military simulations and real-world warfare has completely dissolved.

Check out the trailer breakdown below and see why this game is already messing with the heads of FPS fans.

Psychological Conditioning as a Gameplay Mechanic

Instead of stepping into the combat boots of a glorified action hero, War Fantasy casts you as a blank slate being systematically broken down. You are trapped inside an infinite military training compound under the thumb of a demented, emotionally abusive commanding officer who watches, logs, and analyses your every move.

The horror here isn’t jump scares; it’s the insidious psychological pressure. Every shot you fire, every order you blindly follow, and every second you spend hesitating is fed back into a cold, uncaring algorithm designed to strip away your humanity.

The game draws a direct line from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket straight to the modern military shooter, forcing players to ask a terrifying question: What have video games actually been training us for?

    Navigating the Impossible: Non-Euclidean Terror

True to the developer’s name, the world of War Fantasy doesn’t adhere to standard physics or geometry. As the psychological conditioning intensifies, the physical environment breaks down:

    • Looping Corridors: Hallways that fold in on themselves, trapping you in a perpetual maze of military-industrial architecture.
    • Kaleidoscopic Arenas: Training simulations with no logical exits that shift and reassemble based on your compliance.
    • Hyper-Realistic Weaponry: An incredibly detailed arsenal of modern firearms, drones, and near-future tech. The game intentionally makes the weapons feel real—because authenticity is part of the conditioning.

The game is banking heavily on technophobia, weaponising the player’s choices and behaviours against them. With Steam tags like Narrative, Psychological Horror, and Choices Matter, your attempts to resist or obey will actively shape the nightmare.

Are We Playing Games, or Are Games Playing Us?

What makes War Fantasy look so brilliant—and deeply uncomfortable—is its meta-commentary on the gaming industry itself. It directly targets the normalisation of violence through the gamification of real-world warfare (think drone pilots using controllers).

It isn’t interested in making you feel powerful. It wants you to feel controlled, analysed, and thoroughly trapped inside a machine that won’t let you leave until you’ve been turned into the perfect weapon.

War Fantasy is currently slated for a PC release via Steam, and it’s safe to say our wishlists are already updating. If you’re tired of the same old military power fantasies and want a shooter that will genuinely mess with your head, this is the one to watch.

  • Cult of the Colt: Guns of Eschaton Unveiled as a Brutal Soulslike FPS and Viktor Antonov’s Final Masterpiece

Cult of the Colt: Guns of Eschaton Unveiled as a Brutal Soulslike FPS and Viktor Antonov’s Final Masterpiece

The Wild West is getting dragged straight to hell, and you’re going to need a lot more than just quick reflexes to survive it.

Publisher 4Divinity and developer Eschatology Entertainment have officially announced Guns of Eschaton, an upcoming mystical Western first-person shooter that proudly introduces itself as the world’s first “Soulslike FPS.”

For gamers who crave atmosphere, this announcement comes with an incredibly bittersweet weight. Guns of Eschaton is set within the final original universe envisioned by the legendary, late art director Viktor Antonov—the visual genius behind the dystopian concrete of Half-Life 2’s City 17 and the plague-ridden, whaling-punk streets of Dishonored.

Check out the eerie, adrenaline-pumping announcement trailer below to catch a glimpse of this dark new frontier.

    Welcome to “The Burning”

Set in a decaying, 19th-century America, Guns of Eschaton takes players on a brutal survival journey across a nation plagued by demons, false saints, and occult horrors. This isn’t the romanticised Wild West of Hollywood; it’s a haunted frontier of ruined settlements, mythic roads, and impossible machines caught in a spiritual apocalypse known as “The Burning.”

You step into the boots of a fragile, outmatched gunslinger named Colt, trying to make the treacherous journey across a dying country.

“Go West, gunslinger—go West and die with the country.”

    Tactical Gunplay: Every Bullet Counts

If you think you can sprint through this wasteland treating it like Doom or Call of Duty, you are dead on arrival. Eschatology Entertainment has made it clear that you will have to learn how to shoot all over again:

    • Deliberate Combat: Every single gun has its own distinct character, limitations, and weight. If you fail to master a weapon’s specific quirks, it might just kill you faster than the monsters will.
    • The Cherokee Codex: Lore is literally a weapon in this game. Players must use a hand-drawn codex to study enemy anatomy, rituals, and weaknesses via an advanced “Sequence Points” system.
    • Deep Buildcrafting: You can forge your own tactical playstyle by choosing between passive and active abilities, specialised ammunition types, armour, talismans, and the mystical powers of three distinct sacramental paths.
    • Soulsborne Mechanics: Survival requires mastering perfectly timed parries, tactical dashes, and resource management.

Forge a Posse (or Hunt Others)

You don’t have to brave the end of the world entirely alone. Guns of Eschaton features full solo play alongside online co-op with shared progression, meaning you and your friends can tackle the campaign together without losing your hard-earned build progress.

And for the true gluttons for punishment? A PvP mode is also in the works, allowing you to invade other players’ games and make their road to salvation significantly more difficult.

    A Legendary Creative Legacy

Antonov’s unmistakable architectural and environmental fingerprints are visible all over the trailer. Even amidst the dusty prairies of the Old South, giant, borderline-brutalist structures loom ominously in the distance, seamlessly blending frontier Americana with a grimdark, industrial apocalypse.

Guns of Eschaton is currently slated for release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam). A definitive release date has yet to be announced, but you can already head over to Steam to add it to your wishlist.

If you thought space was safe… You clearly haven’t been paying attention.

The Main Event: Operation Leading Edge

The flagship of this new drop is Operation Leading Edge, a complete, standalone cinematic adventure that also serves as the second gripping instalment of the Jeremiah Saga trilogy.

Designed for 3–5 players plus the Game Mother, the adventure drops players directly into the boots of a team of Colonial Marines. Your mission? Secure a rich mineral deposit on the remote, frozen moon of Jeremiah VI. It’s billed as a routine “drop n’ stop” mission. But as any ALIEN fan knows: what could possibly go wrong?

    Inside the Box:

    • The Main Adventure Book: Packed with dread, tension, and corporate agendas.
    • Two Huge Double-Sided Maps: Massively detailed (34 × 22 inches) layouts of the key terrifying locations.
    • Pre-Generated Characters: Five detailed marines ready to face the dark.
    • Custom Cards & Tokens: Agendas, NPCs, and cardboard markers to track the chaos.

Bring the Horror to Life: The Miniatures Set

To perfectly complement the new adventure, Free League is dropping Miniatures Set: Operation Leading Edge. This box features 20 high-quality, 28mm-scale miniatures requiring zero assembly.

You’ll get highly detailed figures representing:

    • Colonial Marines
    • Enemy troops from the Union of Progressive Peoples (UPP)
    • A host of genuinely horrifying Xenomorphs

Bonus Skirmish Rules: The miniatures set also includes a booklet with simplified combat rules and a scenario generator, allowing you to pivot from roleplaying to playing quick, brutal skirmish battles in the ALIEN universe.

    Upgraded to the ‘Evolved Edition’

For the uninitiated, the Evolved Edition is the streamlined, updated, and revised evolution of Free League’s award-winning system. Alongside Operation Leading Edge, veteran players will be thrilled to see fan-favourite expansions get the Evolved treatment.

Whether you want to respond to an 80-year-old derelict ship’s distress call in Chariot of the Angels, run an open-world sandbox military campaign via the Colonial Marines Operations Manual, or chart 36 uncharted horror-filled planets in Building Better Worlds, Free League has fully retrofitted these books to align with the new edition’s rules.

    Pre-Orders Are Live Now!

You don’t have to wait until the Weyland-Yutani corporation approves your clearance. All of these products are available for pre-order right now on the Free League webshop.

Even better? Pre-ordering grants you immediate access to the early-access PDFs, allowing you to start building your stress dice pool right away, ahead of the physical boxed sets shipping in Q4 2026.
