Indie Games Find Continued Success

As a passion and hobby, gamers have to weather many different storms of ups and downs – failed promises, undelivered features, and poor performance are often among the most frustrating factors in the industry. This has become all too apparent with the recent big AAA titles which have led many to disappointment as the cycle of pre-ordering and pre-releases have led to games that are less than desirable with poor performance and plenty of missing features amongst the laundry list of other problems. This has led to many players seeking out alternatives as favourites, and indie titles have quickly risen to the top of this list.

Much of the success has come from livestreaming and the successes found through big streamers being able to offer unique content – even though there is the risk of the indie title suffering from many of the same issues, it is a little more expected with a smaller budget, but the passion that goes into the game certainly shines through. Games such as Among Us, which had become a huge hit toward the back end of 2020, had managed to show this better than perhaps any title before as it was picked up two years following its initial release, and although it had its own issue, it did manage to show that a smaller, simpler game, could certainly compete with the big releases in popularity. Others like the summer blockbuster of Fall Guys very much did the same, with huge streamer support it was able to grow much quicker than many expected, and although it suffered from issues with cheaters and other bugs within the game itself, it had provided yet another example of indie success – the latest to do so is Rust, another older title, but following the same path.

Not to be the only platform to do so however, as mobile gaming very much followers in similar footsteps with individual often small teams being behind some of the biggest games. A look back to names of the past like Flappy Bird show this more than any, a one-man team putting together a game in a short period of time, but to huge success – although recent success have often come with a bit of backing such as those found in the biggest casino games like Maximum Casinos which have thrived despite initiative and regulation change, it does little to take away from the huge successes on the other side of the coin.

As bigger titles continue to follow the same release pattern and often leading to some level of disappointment, it only strengthens the ongoing success from indie studios and the titles currently being pushed, and it may not be until the bigger studios can fix the issues being seen will change be made, or will users be more trusting once again.
