4 Fun Games with a Gambling Element

Almost all modern game genres have an element of gambling to them, because how we use skill points in a roguelite, or which sides we take in an RPG are always gambles that may or may not play out in the way we want them to. However, we are discussing the likes of in-game casinos, slot machines, poker, dice and bingo here! Rest assured that the gambling aspects are going to be a lot more direct in these four games.

Red Dead Redemption (Both Games)

John Marston, the main character and protagonist players control in the original Red Dead Redemption can gamble by:

  • Playing classic card games such as poker and blackjack in saloons and bars
  • Wagering his cash on lucky horseshoes, arm wrestling, liar’s dice, and five finger fillet

In Red Dead Redemption 2, players are able to gamble in games of poker, blackjack and five finger fillet, just like in the original. However, dominoes as a gambling game made its first appearance in RDR 2. The gambling elements in Red Dead Redemption 2 are less varied than in the original, but a variety of interesting settings and backdrops keep the gambles interesting.

Minecraft

When it comes to Minecraft, it is easier to list the things that players cannot do in the world’s biggest sandbox game. The idea is simple enough in Minecraft Bingo; players need to find survival themed items within the mapped area, as they show up on their respective bingo cards. The cards, scavenger items and the original location of those items will be autogenerated every time. You can gamble on the race with a friend, or try to set new high scores, but any prospect of playing a game of bingo and winning money is missing here unfortunately. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Geralt takes frequent breaks from slaying monsters and bandits to play Gwent in taverns, castles, smithies, guard posts and trading posts. The White Wolf can place bets and win large sums of money from playing Gwent later on, provided that his card collection is good enough. The card & dice game became so popular that CD Projekt Red later released a standalone game called GWENT: The Witcher Card Game. Unique, addictive and extremely popular, the virtual gambling game of Gwent remains the most played, exclusive gambling game ever to be introduced originally inside a video game.

Fallout: New Vegas

Post-apocalyptic Las Vegas, aka New Vegas, has eight different places where players can try their luck out. Most of them are virtual casinos, namely the Gomorrah, the Atomic Wrangler Casino, the Sierra Madre Casino and several others that host blackjack and roulette tables, in addition to a few slot machines. Players can also gamble outside casinos in Fallout: New Vegas. Lucky Horseshoes is only available at the Sunset Sarsaparilla Headquarters, and there’s an option to bet on games of Caravan while travelling through the massive, post-nuclear war Mojave Desert.

This concludes our list, but there are others that could have made it to the top. Honourable mentions include Sims 3 (The Lucky Simoleon Casino DLC) and GTA: San Andreas.
