Planet-Sized Chaos: RUBATO, the Physics-Based Collect-a-thon, Lands on PC & Console!

If you think a bad game of pool can ruin your night, try ruining the entire solar system.

RUBATO, the highly anticipated and delightfully strange 2D physics-based platformer, has officially launched! Developed by the “obnoxiously mysterious” solo developer dconn and brought to consoles by the porting wizards at Headcannon (Sonic Mania Plus), this experimental “collect-a-thon” is now available on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.

The Story: A Billiards Breakout (Literally)

Set in the year 12,012, the universe is under the thumb of the multiquadrillionaire monopoly GSSAI CO. Life is already pretty weird, but things go from “corporate dystopia” to “celestial catastrophe” when a botched game of pool accidentally destroys the solar system.

You play as the Hero of the Stars and the Sky (who happens to look a lot like a very determined frog). Your mission? Scour the remnants of the world to find “Planet Bits” and piece the solar system back together before Higher Management finds out.

Gameplay: Lick, Pull, and Physics

Forget traditional jumping and stomping. RUBATO leans into its experimental roots with a focus on physics-driven interaction:

The Tongue Mechanic: Use your tongue to lick, grab, and fling enemies or objects. It’s a bit like Yoshi’s Island met a chaotic physics engine.

Open Exploration: Navigate five massive, densely packed regions—from a sprawling giant bakery to a hilariously poorly planned city.

Metroidvania DNA: Uncover shortcuts and secrets that reward curiosity and mastery of the game’s unique momentum.

Genre-Bending Surprises: Don’t get too comfortable; the game is known for sudden shifts in perspective and gameplay styles that keep you on your toes.

Why You Should Play It

Beyond the absurdity of “saving the world because of a pool mishap,” RUBATO hides a surprisingly deep, human narrative. The game’s slogan—”To save the world, you must save yourself first”—hints at an emotional core that balances out the internet-age humour and satirical corporate jabs.

“It gets silly. It gets serious. Really concerningly serious. Uh… is the guy who made this game okay?” — Official Game Blurb

RUBATO is a love letter to the experimental era of early 2000s gaming, blending the “moon hunting” of Super Mario Odyssey with the aesthetic charm of Part Time UFO. Whether you’re here for the “Very Positive” rated platforming or the bizarre lore, one thing is certain: you’ve never played a game quite like this.

Grab RUBATO today on your platform of choice and start licking those planets back into place!
